Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony to start charging for PSN? Pachter says...

PSN to cost?

Hell no! 78 27.18%

F you, Pachter! 82 28.57%

Yes 52 18.12%

Yeah, but I would assume an increase in PSN+ offerings rather than a mandatory thing.
I would think maybe all new features would move to PSN+, like, PSP game transfer to Vita, cross game chat, etc etc.

Its only a matter of time and Sony fans who think its not going to happen are kidding themselves.

Let's see Sony is posting massive losses currently while MS is raking in millions on Xbox Live fees. It simply makes financial sense to do so, and if Sony doesn't start charging this generation it is for sure going to happen on the PS4.

Honestly if they don't start charging they're crazy.

This. Also, it seems likely publishers next too Sony will be pushing them to do it, because they're having to pay costs for demos etc on PSN (Or is that something I'm wrong about guys? I think I read a article about it 1 or 2 years back...)

And if they don't start charging, PSN is unlikely to ever be up to par with XBL *puts on flame resistant suit*

I take it you missed KylieDog's PSN vs LIVE comparison?

Its not an insane opinion.

It makes perfect sense that SONY incites consumers to get playstation+ with further advantages. Aslong as the multiplayer keeps beeing free. This is very important because in the era of no exclusives this is what diferenciates their machine and personally its gonna be a deciding factor for my purchase choice.

It makes no sense to charge for such a limited online service like microsoft does. I got a 360 but i always refused to pay it. Microsoft is losing a customer next gen because of that.

The thing is, the multiplayer component of console games is not a rich experience at all. Its a few maps and an exercise on repetition. I understand charging a fee for a game built for online play from the ground up (MMO's), where the experience is crafted and plentiful for that online play. Multiplayer on consoles is an afterthought, and people paying for it are definitly beeing taken advantage of.

I actually am amused by some posts of players who got completely taken over by the microsoft propaganda. Multiplayer costs are factored in on the game development, server costs are less than minimal these days.

Another reason why this wont happen is the fact that Nintendo is offering/gonna offer the same package of online play for free with the WiiU. The one thats gonna lose sales this next gen is microsoft and a console sale lost costs alot more than one yearly subscription lost.

I'm surprised it didn't happen already consider Sony financial state.

If nothing else, I'm convinced basic online play will remain free.

SCE has already demonstrated, to limited degree, that PSN users are willing to pay for more, assuming they see the value in the additional services. Currently, PSN + is a service that gives extra for the subscription in the form of early access, discounts and additional features, most pertaining to cloud sync and automated functions. They are well worth the cost, assuming the PSN user frequently buys content and is generally a moderate to heavy user of the PS3.

That said, it is possible for SCE to pare down the feature set of free PSN to the point where anyone who is not a light user will see the benefit of a subscription.

makes sense, but i won't pay. Starhawk will be my last multiplayer online game. i think Sony may offer more that people have to pay for, or even cost significantly more if you're not signed up for psn+

Highly doubt it. Why would they create PS Plus to get rid of PS Plus? I guess they could drop online features for non plus members but the back lash might not be worth it along with loosing their competitive advantage against XBLA. Sony has also declared their intent to keep it free. Online passes are the obvious trade off.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

I've had PSN for free far too long for me to want to pay for it... It's like.. I've had it for free already, why pay for it to continue getting it?

The sad thing is, I can't think of a reason for them not to charge... Other than me simply not wanting to pay for it... There's a reason I don't play 360... the exclusives, and free online... But, if I had to pay, then, who knows... I may just quit, and play my Genesis exclusively, or, maybe I'll just get xbox live.

I don't know... I don't see any online service like this being worth anymore than 10 bucks a month... Or, I'll just find something else to do.

Maybe they should start archiving the demos and videos, and everything in the store that's over 3 months old, that was once free. And, maybe they should allow PSN+ users to have all new content added to the store an entire week early.

Then, the following week, all content is available (That isn't PSN+ exclusive content), then, 3 weeks later, all free content, demos included, will require PSN+.

I dont doubt it, but if it does happen, Nintendo Network will (hopefully) be the only Service you don't really have to pay for. So charging for it will give Nintendo an advantage.

They're not going to charge for it. It's one of the major selling points of the system.
