Wii U to be priced at $299?

Nintendo will price the Wii U aggressively at $299 when it launches later this year, according to a report WiiUDaily has received (from the same source that brought us theWii U system specs rumor). Nintendo will price the Wii U at $299 in the US, $299 Euro in Europe, and at 20,000 Yen in Japan, which comes in at around $250 USD. No word on Wii U software pricing.

Considering that the Wii U will initially only compete against the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which can be had for $200 and $250, respectively, it’s not surprising that Nintendo will price the Wii U aggressively. They almost have to. Sony and Microsoft will reportedly release their next-gen consoles in 2013.

The most interesting part of that report is that it's apparently more expensive than a straight conversion of the Yen; Nintendo hedging its bets against being hurt further by the exchange rate?

niman en? That's it?

That's super cheap, they must be losing a lot of money at that price... or maybe it doesn't come with any controllers.

These things are going to sell like hotcakes  :S

Good price if true. 360 and probably PS3 will be undoubtably cheaper by the time WiiU releases though, so anything more than $300 is risky.

Knew it. No way it will be over $300(in USA)

I would guess they're going with 350

$299/€299 is the most they can aim for, if they want this thing to be successful. Kinda surprised though that it's supposed to be only 20,000 yen. That's really cheap for a new home console.

I hope they include a Wiimote and Nunchuk with each system, otherwise the Wii spirit will die completely. Third party developers won't necessarily support controllers that not every Wii U owner is guaranteed to have, this goes especially for singleplayer games.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

I think that a higher price would have been fine for the first 6 months or so. Do not know much about the financial situation in Europe, but things seem to be getting better in America this year. Come Christmas Parents will be willing to spend a little extra on a Wii U for their kids this year.

I hope that their loss on each console sold is not too horribly large. I agree with poroporo, not sure if the controller will be included with the system. That seems like it would be bundled with a higher priced package.
But I am sure that Nintendo has a few things figured out with it. So maybe it will be perfectly fine at that price point. Just funny that Reggie said it would be priced high, and then a few months later it is not even close to being high priced.

Thats a damn good price point, I'd pick it up

Considering last npd showed the average xbox price was 300$ and the average PS3 was 275$ in America. That seems like a very good price. People are willing to buy current gen consoles for $300 still.
