Forums - Sales Discussion - The UK nearly as big as Japan? NOPE

Ive seen people here mention the UK is close to Japan's Market size, Latest figures show Japan is still $2 billion larger than the UK

The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment said total retail video game product sales in the UK hit £2.52 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2011, a figure which beat the group's estimates, but still puts the market down 13 percent year-over-year.

I think people have this misconception because home console numbers are actually quite close (UK may be even on top, don't feel like checking). But the thing is many people in Japan have simply moved to portables, and the portable market is much bigger in Japan than it is in the UK.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

So the truth is that the Japanese market is a whole 50% bigger than UK's. I was alwas suspicous to this myth that the UK market has surpassed Japan's.

Population 100% bigger, revenue 50% bigger.

Uk market is huge for its size. Undeniable.

That's surprising, I thought the Japanese were gaming mad.

It certainly is.

Actually marginally more games were sold in UK last year than in Japan (thanks to MW3) but games itself are a lot more expensive in Japan (PS3 games retail normally with 8000 yen price tag = 65 pounds...) and majority of the games ltd sales come from full price when in UK the price collapses rather quickly. Also as HW market Japan has always been far bigger. With these combined the Japanese market makes a lot more revenue.

Consoles are massive in the UK. As far as I can tell, handhelds are dying a death, mainly thanks to smart phones.

Those revenue figures are forgetting huge sections of the market though aren't they? Social, smart phone and digital downloads?
