Forums - Sales Discussion - A lot of big games in EMEAA overtracked? Including gasp Halo Reach and Gran Turismo 5

Well in this weeks pal charts someone posted this which i found very interesting.

These are total sales in Europe of the highest grossing games for 2010. The list is ordered by revenue rather then total sales so some of the games aren't in order saleswise but it still lists total sales of the games. Its from GfK and Chart-Track, not random numbers some kid made up.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=434185

This is how I checked how much the games sold in EMEAA according to vgchartz

http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly.php?reg=Others&console=&date=2010&maker=

The key games that vgchartz seems to be overtracking BY A LOT are Gran Turismo 5, Halo Reach, Final Fantasy, and Assassins Creed.

Gran Turismo 5 sold 3.25mil according to vgchartz. It only sold 2mil in Europe. Maybe 300k more in launch bundles.
It only shipped 230k in Asia http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html
(That includes Australia since they don't list it and all the listed regions=total gt5 shipments ww)
Overtracked by at least 700k in Emeaa.
Halo Reach sold 1.75mil according to vgchartz. It only sold 1.15mil in europe. Couldn't have sold more then 200k in Asia and Australia. Maybe 100k from launch bundles.
Overtracked by at least 300k in EMEAA not to mention at least 700k in America according to npd numbers.
Assassins Creed Brotherhood sold 2.6mil according to vgchartz. It only sold 1.9mil in Europe. At most 150k in Asia. Maybe 100k Australia
Overtracked by at least 500k in EMEAA.
Final Fantasy XIII sold 2mil according to vgchartz. It only sold 1.1mil in Europe. I assume JRPGS sell well in Asia but even if sales were almost half of europe's
Overtracked by at least 500k in EMEAA probably a lot more.

Those seem to be overtracked by the most but there are a few others overtracked as well according to that chart.

Obviously no company is perfect at tracking sales but these differences seem too big.

At first I thought Fifa 2011 was undertracked but i forgot to include PS2 and PC numbers in which case even it seems slightly overtracked

So am I missing something. Is there some magical country not part of mainland europe but part of EMEAA that buys hundreds of thousands of copies of every game. Or are games bundled A LOT more in EMEAA then I thought. Usually I only hear about ridiculous 360 bundles in Europe though so that wouldn't explain all the games.

I made assumptions for some of the games' Asia/Oceana sales but theres no way around GT5 sales considering shipments by regions are shown on polyphony's website and even if I'm underestimating Asia/Oceana for the other games it can't be by more then a hundred thousand or so but I actually think I'm overestimating them.

I think your forgetting the middle east they seem to have gotten behind the PS3 also NDP only tracks NA where as Vgchartz is Americas as to Polophony I will leave that to ethmoza .

NDP only tracks USA, not Canada. VGC include Brazil, Mexico, and many other regions for it's Americas number. However a while ago I read that 87% of the Americas sales are contributed to US sales, and I would assume 8.7% contribute to Canada (1/10th the population).

As for EMEAA, not only did the OP forget the middle east, but they also forgot Africa. In the Middle East, Africa and Asia territory, there are 5 million PS3's and 3 million 360's. 600k for GT5 or Halo off 5 or 3 million consoles is very doable.

That and VGC now track Halo Reach digital sales from the bundle, NDP doesn't include those numbers.

by asia I meant most of the middle east as well which  polyphony includes as part of their asia numbers. As for Africa I have no idea if they would be included under Asia or Europe but either way there is no way Africa is such a signifcant portion of EMEAA.

The population of Africa is 1 billion people. The number of console gamers there likely exceeds the Middle East. I remember when Halo 3 came out, they had a world map and stars representing clusters of gamers. Most gamers were east/west coast USA/Canada, and there were a lot in Western Europe. However outside of NA and EU, the only places I remember seeing stars were Africa (South Africa and Tanzania), Brazil, and a little bit in Japan.

I said earlier, if US is 87% of Americas, and Canada is 8.7%, then there is still 8.3% of Americas sales contributed to South America. I wouldn't think Africas software sales are any different then South Americas. So if Halo Reach sold 7 million in Americas, this corresponds to 600k sales in South America, which correspond to 600k sales in Africa, which....is magically almost exactly the missing amount from your data.

You might be skeptical that Africa gets as many console sales as South America, but believe me, I've been to Tanzania, it's not as rural as you think. Also unlike Brazil, consoles aren't heavily taxed (a 360 now is still a $600 system there), so even if there are less gamers in South Africa and the east coast, more are able to buy the games.

The "Europe" they use is 17 countries, isn't it?

EU is bigger than 17 countries.

Without real, actual data from the countries not mentioned, this can't go anywhere. Not unless you show us hard data from places like Asia, Africa, etc.

Man if GT5 is overtracked like that in EMEAA people are going to freak.

But really I want to see what other (more knowledgeable) people have to say about this.

Polyphony digital sales are as of DEC 2010,so its has a complexities of Sales, shipments, etc

VGC EMEAA ouver more country than GFK and SONY's definition of REGIONS Also differs

Poliphony includes downloads in their shipments so they include both, retail and downloads

about 2 million gran turismo sitting on shelves
