Forums - Politics Discussion - Why do western armies always tell their enemies when they will attack?

So I've noticed this over the last few years. The US, Canada, Israel, Britain and almost every other major western power tells their enemies exactly when they will attack.

Libya as soon as authorized the US and her allies told Gaddafi exactly when the first bombing raids would start. Saying exactly what the targets of those bombing raids would be.

Example a rocket lands in Israel blowing up, Israel then announces they will respond the next day. They prepared to invade Gaza and guess what they tell Hamas the invasion is coming and even give them a time frame.

Kenya announces they will enter Somalia, they tell Al Shabab exactly when they will enter then they also tell Al Shabab exactly what their target is. When and where they will attack.

Then the Mexican Army is about to move on drug cartels so they send a weeks notice. We will be entering this town in one week to hunt down the cartel.

Today another notice, Brazil's military will be cracking down on the slums in Rio. They tell the gangs they are intending to crack down on exactly when they intend to come in and crack down.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Non-democratic countries don't give notices before they take action. Did Germany warn Poland "Were going to invade in a few days" did Russia warn any countries? Does China? What about North Korea or Pakistan, Iran or Syria.

In fact the police don't warn the criminals they are coming. Your getting ready to arrest a guy at his house, you don't call his house 2 hours before you go and tell the guy "Hey were coming to arrest you in two hours" and they certainly don't go into detail like Democracies do "Yah were going to breach your house through the back entrance we will have 20 men in our team carrying these weapons".

Why would our democratic countries give away so much details, what ever happened to the element of surprise? I mean your moving troops in to take out a cartel or gang you don't warn them. I mean seriously yah give them time to bunker down and take up defencive positions.

I can't see the sense in letting the enemy know exactly when and how you will attack them! Any ideas?

Chivalry, I guess. It gives the enemy a chance to comply with whatever demands are made of them, and it also gives civilians a chance to get the fuck out of the way if they don't.

Or perhaps we're just not that smart.

What Badgegnome? said. or maybe shit aint real.

We're getting better.  You should have seen how bad we used to be.

It's because the military action itself is only a part of the picture. By setting the time and place of the attack in stone, it sends a message to all the enemy's grunts. "We will fuck you whenever and wherever we feel like it. Go ahead, take a running start. I like my prey to squirm a bit." Incidentally, this also gives the less-willing recruits an opportunity to escape. The fact that democracies almost always have the power to win helps, AND it makes them look like the good guys.

The difference between that and, say, Germany invading Poland is that Germany was not exponentially more powerful than Poland, and Poland had the capacity to really hurt Germany's armed forces. The current phenomenon only exists because of vastly different power levels.

Because of how lopsided its going to be, it doesn't matter if they know when its coming.

Time for hype

as others have said in modern times western militaries announce their invasions, because the enemy armies as so ill equipped and trained in comparison. Its pretty much the equivalent of a professional basketball team playing against 5 blind children with no hands. Again this is for actual battles. Guerilla tactics are still very effective against western militaries hence why the United States has lost 4300 soldiers since occupying Iraq while it lost only 100 soldiers to destroy the entire Iraq army which at the time was considered I think the 6th largest in the world.

The rules of War. There really are rules of War lol

There are rules of war, and as people have already said, western democracies are usually so much more powerful than their enemy that it doesn't matter if they get a warning. Plus the thing about the slums in Rio, some commander said that it reduces casualties and the gang members leave the area without violence.

"Helicopters hovered as hundreds of police, supported by the Brazilian army, flooded into Rocinha, a labyrinth of ramshackle houses perched on a hill overlooking some of Rio's most affluent neighbourhoods. The slum is thought to be the source of much of the cocaine distributed in the city. Not a single shot was fired and, according to reports, just one person was arrested, in an apparent vindication of the authorities' decision to announce the raid days earlier to avoid bloody gun battles."
