Patchner will be right. If MS doesn't price cut, PS3 will outsell 360 in the holidays.

I expect PS3 sales to continue following the Wii trend and drop in sales next week (despite whatever boost Madden brings). PS3's growth is slowing down faster then Wii's and it had Monster Hunter to help it a bit in Japan. I feel this is the temporary PS3 peak, and sales will drop 10% next week (not 20% because of Madden).

360 I expect to be level next week, or maybe a small 5% boost due to madden.

3DS will remain above 200k, but might drop another 20%. I hope it stabilizes high.

The rest, no major changes.

I hope MS is smart and cuts the 360's price soon. I think they will cut it, but they are just waiting for the holidays to start.

WW, PS3 will most likely outsell 360, anyway.  Even, if MS cuts the 250 GB to $249, its going to have less of an effect than the $249 PS3, as there is already a $199 360 SKU.  And this time around, the cheaper SKU is the exact same console as the top of the line 360 (except for the larger HDD), which wasn't the case with the older 360.  The only way I could see the 360 outselling the PS3 (though not by too much), is if they cut both models by $50, as well as cut Kinect by ~$75 coupled with a huge ad campaign for both cuts.

And you have to think, 360 is going to mostly see great sales in the US and UK, with some alright sales in the rest of EMEAA, for the holidays.  Its almost completely dead in Japan.  However, PS3 will see great sales in Japan and the rest of EMEAA, while in the US and UK, the sales are going to still be pretty good.  PS3 isn't really dead anywhere.

360 typically sells better during the holiday season, mainly because of it's strong US demograph. So if 360 got a price cut just matching PS3's, it's extremly unlikely that PS3 outsells the 360 in the last 4 months of the year.

However I think the 360 will get a $50 price cut, ontop of a $30 Kinect price cut. So a 4GB Kinect 360 will cost $220-$230, and a 320GB 360 will cost $250. This probably won't happen, MS already announced pricing on limited ed 360 models for Novemeber, and there is no cut in price.

Holidays boost sales more in English speaking countries, and 360 is vastly more popular in UK and Americas (by a factor of nearly 2 to 1!). Don't forget that too. It's also more then UK and US, there is Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Also UK and US are the two biggest home console regions in the world (More home consoles are sold in UK then Japan). So if the biggest regions see the biggest % jump and already have a base over 1.5 to 1 in size, then obviously 360 gets a bigger boost during the holidays, and if you watch past trends this has generally been the rule.

Playstation grabbing the home theatre market from Windows isn't anymore one of MS worries, Android expanding even more than PS2 could just dream about is. So MS will cut price only when needed, not just to fight with Sony for WW 2nd place, as long as its leadership in America is safe. This doesn't mean that MS won't cut XB360 price, it eventually will, but not just for e-peen sake.

Notice that PS3 and XB360 are the only HW up this week, OTOH Wii just had a price cut, but its effect is already wearing down. XB360 is already affordable without price cuts, Wii was already too even before the cut, PS3 was the most expensive, so it actually was the one that could benefit more from a cut, but once the price is right, the thing that counts the most are the games, and both MS and Sony currently are lucidly acknowledging it.

Finally, there are many, not mutually exclusive, possible reasons for Sony to cut by just $50: cutting profit as little as possible, not wanting to start a price war with MS, planning to start permanently bundling Move with every PS3 in the middle term without increasing the entry level price, planning to release a lot of bundles for Xmas, this latter move, again, to add value instead of further cutting price.

Sony and Microsoft have different views of the same situation currently. Microsoft is making money and their third party relationships and games will not be affected at this point even if the ps3 outsells it until the start of next gen. So why cut the price?

But for Sony, they want to increase the userbase, solidify the brand and recapture former glory in the eyes of the hardcore gamer now, before they launch the PS4.

With these paths pretty much clearly laid out, Sony's "e-peen" as you say will get bigger and bigger. And the PS3 will catch the 360 in ltd hw totals.

I have been waiting for years, could happen now within 18 months.

I'd wager that by about 500k, give or take a few. Oh! and I already checked the main page twice and they have MH3HD as PS3.

Oh how about that.. 3DS and DS both outselling the PSP .... how very sad!

Pretty much agree, but increasing the user base, both to increase SW sales and strengthen the brand before PS4 launch isn't e-peen growing, it has very serious purposes. E-peen would be a price war for short term sales leadership and that's the thing I don't see MS and Sony doing likely. Also, for both companies, cutting prices following their own plans, supporting the cut with regular games releases and new peripherals and not chasing each other worked very well, while it's quite obvious that neglecting games library and rushing the last cut worked horribly for Wii.

One last reason for this unexpected peace between MS and Sony: the premature demise of the almighty Wii offers both companies more room to expand without starting again a war. If such room shrinks too much, they'll make war again, but right now it would just be masochistic.

To sum it up, I see too Sony making PS3 grow as much as possible and MS doing the same for XB360, and they'll also cut price to do it, if and when necessary, but I don't see them anymore harming each other and themselves to do it, at least in the short and mid term.

With the Modern Warfare 3 console being $400, as someone already mentioned, the 360 won't be seeing a cut anytime soon. It will have to depend strictly on deals, Kinect, Gears, & MS's marketing. The PS3 will still take the holiday (and year), but MS is fine either way.

Maybe Kinect will see a $50 price cut?

I agree with you, 360 won't outpace the PS3 without a price cut, or some ridiculous bundle. Knowing MS though, the games bundled will be digital.

Actually, the PS3 sold better than the Xbox 360 worldwide during the 2009 holiday season.  And IIRC it also outsold the Xbox 360 last holiday season but just barely after adjustments on this site regardless of the Xbox 360's strong US demograph.

What does IIRC mean?

No the PS3 did not outsell the 360 last holiday season, check again. 360 was adjusted down, but it still sold something like 30% better.

2009 was the one exception. PS3 had an incredibly strong fall due to the Slim PS3 and price cut. Sony brought down the 360/PS3 gap from 8.1 to 4 million with this move. Very smart buisness strategy, and because of this I have to say 360 typically outsells PS3 during the holidays, instead of always.
