i don't know a game has them until they pop up for doing something stupid or story driven. Its like "Achievement for beating the training, or prologue" ect. stupid box pops up on screen and tells me something OBVIOUS and pointless.

i actually despise trophies and achievements. even the ones that are like super hard to get. they are pointless they don't give you anything. you don't get some unlockable, nothing. just pointless points that nerds like to show off to others.

I'll admit it then. Im a nerd. I enjoy comparing and the feeling they give of accomplishment. But you are right they really have no value in terms of unlocking something new in the game. Mainly just ego boosters. I think a lot of it also depends on ones personality that determines how important achievements/trophies are to you. Im just competative in that regard and like the feeling of accomplishment. I also understand some people just think they are annoying and could care less.

I never look at the achievement list prior to buying a game.... I do not care about it for my decision on buying a game.... now that said I do try to get them when they make sens and/or are challenging without beingh completely outside the game itself....
I hate when they do a bunch of stupid collectibles just for the sake of achievement....especially if you don't unlock secrets for the story.... like collect all the blue orbs... or get all the dead pigeons... but beside that nothing I hate that and don't even bother trying to get it.....

now if there is a clear up that level without using weapon, or staying on foot, or in less than 2min stuff like that and they are doable in less than a week of practice I always give them a try....

so yeah I don't try to get all of them... I don't care about them when it comes to the purchase decision.... but I'll try to have the one I like for my bragging rights with my friends and to sometimes to have more fun with a game i finished but I really liked....

I think some achievement when well done extend the replayability of a game.... and yet if you don't like it you don't have to do it.... I think they are a great addition to the games in general...

This! But on the trophy side.

I never purchase a game based on its trophy list. And I never hunt for all the trophies, but every now and then I will commit some time to obtaining interesting trophies. So far, I have 0 platinums, and I think it will always be that way. Getting every single trophy is too time consuming for me with the limited time I have for gaming, I need to just enjoy the experience of playing before the next big thing gets released. If I spend my time trying to platinum,I would probably get to play 2 or 3 games a year cause some of those trophies are just ridiculous and are really for people who don't only have the devotion to get them, but the much needed time as well.

I am not against them though, I do think they add a layer of experience to the game, and can be appreciated at different levels by different gamers. The trophy chime almost always puts a smile on my face.

Me too.

see my gamercard... oh wait :p

no in all seriousness, I like achievements, when used cleaverly, it's a way to incite you to play differently (geometry wars, "not getting touched while not shooting for 1 min" as an example) and at least they reward the poor souls that spend eons searching for any little pigeon to shoot... (GTA).

What I hate though are online achievements... they don't make the online game any better.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

I do like them and when the game is fun and the achievement list is smart and well made, i try to get them all. If the game is meh and the achievement list requires multiple playthroughs or an insane amount of grinding, i won´t do them.

One clear example of this is the game Luxor, it was a fun game for a while.... but the achievement list was so damn frustrating that i simply couldn´t stand it.

And on the other side, a game like Castlevania: Lords of shadow, had a perfect balance, for me the game was great and didn´t mind playing through it a couple of times, also the achievements only required to find all the gems, purchasing all movements, complete all trials and clear all stages on the hardest difficulty, which was a good challenge and i would not mind doing it for a game like Zelda if it had this feature.

Well made lists, fun achievements are good, frustrating and nearly impossible ones...not so much.

I enjoy trophies as incentive to experience a game more thoroughly and for added challenges. I only try to get a platinum if it is a difficult one though. I respect a gamer much more if they have a few difficult platinums like Dead Space 2, Demons Souls, Mirror's Edge etcetera as opposed to a trophy whore who has 30 platinums in games like Megamind or Saw.

hey i'm a nerd too, but i dont' need to compare my junk in the shower to feel good about anything.  if getting every achivement in a game makes a person feel good then so be it for the completion feeling.  But showing off to others i don't get.

I need to get every ITEM or thing IN the game makes me feel good.  i could care less if i didn't kill 1000 enemies, but would be annoyed as hell if i could not get say every bottle in zelda.  do i even use a bottle in zelda?  nah, havne't died in a zelda game in ages, but still want them all.  Do i then go and tell others that i got them all?  no, why would they care?

take league of legends.  There are WAY more champions that i hate or suck with than i am good with, BUT i will still plan on acquiring them all.  I WN'T have all teh costumes though cause they cost MONEY.  Or castle age on facebook.  There are tons of items or soldiers that are pointless to me, being that they are too weak to attribute to my army YET i still try and get them due to wanting them all.  Or pokemon games.  i sure as hell don't use all 647 or wahtever pokemon, but i want to catch them all.  if any of those games had achievements, they would NOT make me feel any better about doing any of those things.  I woudl not get a smile on my face if i got an achievement for catching my 100th pokemon.  I would not brag to my friends or show off my platinum trophy for catching all 647, or ect.  And anyone showing me their trohpies or achivement score doesn't make me go "wow"  i mean half the games i've played you get practically every achivement for just beating the game.  how is that impressive.  if you can't beat the game you suck ass

LOLed on your first sentence. I had to know that one was coming. But, yeah I think if someone is going around on XBL/PSN community bragging to every man woman and child about their killer gamer/trophy score then they are obsessive and probably dont have much feeling of self worth. I just like going through my friends lists and seeing which ones they have gotten and which ones they havn't. If there is an achievement/trophy that I have not been able to get and I see a friend has, then I have respect for them and try to figure out how they achieved it that particular task. It also tells me how much my friends have played certain games and compare what each of us has accomplished.

Don't give a fuck.
A good game is a good game without a fictitious sense of accomplishment.

i actually hate em b/c im like ocd with stuff like that completing things

but if i game iam on the fence about has easy trophys yes ill get it and vise versa

yes i always look at the list pre release

i only have 2-3 games that i dont have the platinum for currently but as time in this gen goes buy ive kinda lost interest in platinum trophy hunting some upcoming games like bf3 i know will have brutal online trophies and i'll never plat it but i'll be buying it and earning what i can

yeah i think it has increased involvement but not enjoyment some of them are just alot of grinding and frustration and for nothing cause there are players that just boost the hell out of them

i really hate the remastered games like MGS b/c i did everything with the game in the ps2 version yrs ago (stealth camo unlock ect.) i dont want to have to do it again especially with all these good current gen games about to release i dont want to sit through that with MGS 2 and 3 when i should be playing unchared 3

if i were sony ms or nin i would make multi plat games have exclusive achievements meaning getting rid of all the hard grinding ones for ones that are more achievable idk about nin but im sure this would sway gamers to the console with the easier achievement list

i also hate games with glitched achievements and they never get patched but when gamers hack some of there achievements they get banned what about the game dev he should get banned for failing at his own game

hopefully all this trophy hunting this gen was not for nothing meaning that they will still be displayed in are online profiles for next gen if not i'll be done with it next gen

It's sure a nice thing to have but i don't rely on them. Though I know a few examples where they even have a disastrous impact (World Of Warcraft etc.)
