Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo: It's not our goal to have the best online.

It's not an argument for or against, since everyone has their own scale to measure things. Five worthwhile releases for the last six months, making it nearly a game a month, for someone like me it's enough (I've only bought three WW so far, maybe two more this summer).

How many games do you need each month for it not to be pathetic?

Haven't put a number to it in my head, just that it falls far far short of the number of worthwhile releases of the other two services.  And honestly I blame it on Nintendo for not putting more behind the titles that do release on the service.  Why would you put something on WW where it can be totally forgotten about over something like PSN or XBLA where you have the chance of gaining support from Sony or MS and becoming popular?

Limitations like the maximum size admissible stopped more games for being released in the service. But you're right, WW is missing the hype found in the other services though it started of well with World of Goo. I wonder how the online shop (and other online features) will pan out next generation for Nintendo, and if they learnt anything from this one. At least there doesn't seem to be a size limit anymore due to the storage options.

Taking out the size limitation will certainly help, but they also need to do more promotion for the great things coming out on the service when they get them.  We'll just have to see what they've learned from this gen I guess.

First Miyamoto says the Wii U won't be powerful and now he says they don't care about online?

Seriously, the thread's title is just very misleading; What he said was, "We're not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that's not our goal", and he finished with the following:

"But, understanding that the types of experiences our consumers like to play do often contain elements to them that can be improved or may even require an online connection and also knowing that the system is going to have a browser I think suggests that obviously internet and internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system." He went on to discuss possible creative uses for online. "There are opportunities to take advantage of online to expand a local, same-room multiplayer experiences by connecting that to the internet and making new types of play that way," he said. "Also by having the smaller screen, being able to go online and perhaps see what game your friend is playing or see what TV they're watching, I think there are a lot of possibilities for how you could use that," he said. "Certainly internet functionality is something that will be important for the system."

If anything, his main point was to stress that Wii U's online is an important factor, even if it's not their main goal to try and best the XBLA experience.

"Moore: For sports games in which plays are involved, how do we utilize the controller? Madden being the most obvious example: masking you intentions against your competitor that sat on the couch who could see what plays you're calling. Secondly we're delighted that it's high-def, which is important to sports games. The fidelity of the imagery is important. Lastly, with online, Nintendo is very committed to having a powerful online, both with infrastructure and building a community, which is very important to us at EA Sports, and so it all comes together very nicely."

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

with steamworks added to alot of the 3rd party games, Wii U could have a killer online system.

all they need to do is remove friend codes and put a messaging feature and that's it
