I would love to work in MS' marketing department despite how much I despise the company as a whole.

They are probably one of the premier marketing departments in the world.

They are spending 1 billion dollars on Kinect and WP7 in the next 3 months alone. Sony was right, they can't compete with that.

This is actually a very interesting discussion:  Sony's advertising budget for 2008 was ~5 Billion.  About 4 times as large as Microsofts.

Here are links so I'm not accused of fudging numbers (I'm sure these could be verified in SEC filings as well):

So it would appear that Sony COULD compete with that budget for the Playstation division, but they choose not to.

wow, they have too many products to market it seems. I believe most of that money is spent on Sony pictures.

Maybe Microsoft should focus that money on doing their usual trick...bribing developers for some decent launch titles...

Kinect will launch with terrible games at a rediculous price of $149.99...

I really am not liking this motion sensing crap at all...this is the worst gen ever...all three consoles are over focused on motion sensing and the "casual market" pffft >_>

If only they invested that much in making games.

That is just insane. I hope it will pay back, even though I hate kinect. :P

Pushing 500 million dollars on advertising for this is stupid. What if it completely fails Microsoft? You can advertise all you want but it still doesn't change the fact that your un-finished technology is over priced.

general consumers are not well-informed. they do buy into hypes. so i believe kinect will sell well.

Well unlike some in this thread, I don't think advertising is bad (not insinuating you do, but others appear to). I'd be real interested in knowing what the "It only does everything" campaign is costing Sony and I'm REALLY interested in why they didn't support MOVE with a bigger ad campaign.

But I digress, sorry don't want to derail the thread.

That's really sad, this amount on advertisement is ridiculous. They could spend this amount of money on develloping better games

You are talking about a snapshot in time. Yes, in 2010 Microsoft is spending money on advertising a product. In 2012, they may be spending more money on making "better games".

Kinda like sony circa 2000 and PS2...

"Sure Dreamcast has many and better games than we do for a year, but we will advertise and hype this DVD player and CGI graphix. Kojima will release MGS2 sooner or later..."

Yet I just don't see what great games(that gamers would want to play) could be developed with kinect. Also kinect has more chances of failing than the ps2 did back int the days, I hope for microsoft that it has some success or the game industry could be in quite some trouble in the next few years.

10% of that would be enought to revive Mechwarrior and Freelancer :(

So Kinect has cost maybe around $1 billion, how many sales to break even?
