Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Oh NO... New 360 Propietary HDD

People just look for a reason to complain, don't they?  My 360 came with a 60gb HDD and a few days ago, I bought a 500gb HDD from Wal-Mart which I use to store data for my PS3, 360, AND PC.  Did people forget that Microsoft opened the 360 up to external memory about a month ago?

And, the new 360 comes with a 250gb HDD!!  How many trailers, demos, and installed games do people need?  I installed a shitload of games on my 360's HDD but I really only play about 5 games at once.  It's overkill.

Hmmm... MS should really have thought of a method to connect current HDDs to the new redsigned console, or at least transfer all data relatively painlessly.

you can!  there will be a data transfer cable.. its already confirmed

Then what's all the fuss about?!

Meh, the shits 250gb.  How much DLC, XBLA titles and game saves can you guys possibly have to where that's nowhere near enough storage capacity?  If you want to transfer stuff, just use a USB HDD.

In a big announcement at E3 today we saw the new Xbox 360 Slim looking all shiny and black coming with wireless N, 250 Gb HDD and a much smaller case. It is available now for all those gamers looking for new hardware but in a look behind the scenes Aaron Greenberg showed how the HDD worked. The HDD on the new system is completely different than the previous iterations and is not a normal laptop HDD that can be easily removed via a bay in the back of the system. Aaron also showed the interface for the Kinect on the back of the system.

What does this mean for gamers? You will not be able to switch out your HDD easily and upgrade to a 1 Tb drive or bigger without buying it directly from Microsoft. The big HDD is cool but it is a bit of a shame that they went the propietary route and did not leave it as a normal laptop HDD like the Playstation 3.

We will be trying to get more specs and hands on with it shortly so stay tuned for more info.

how will old 360 gamers tranfer copy protected games over if they buy the new one?

They'll do it with flash drives, because on the 360, unlike the PS3 or Wii, you can save and install games, saves, and profiles onto flash drives, and play them on any console you like, and you can also move them from on Xbox 360 HDD to another.

This has been common knowledge for a long long time.

actually u can save everything in a flash drive on a ps3 not a install game but a whole backup of ur HDD. back up utility , if u got enough space , either way there is a lan tranfer too.

u can save individual saves files there too.

please don't talk if u dont know.

Hmm, I wish they would go the sony way. Given i doubt I will replace my 120 elite any time soon.

WTF part of my statement did you not understand?

The vast majority of gaming content on the 360 hard-drive is related to game installs. Thus, any bitching about transferring 120gbs of data is probably related to custom installed content. I said, factually, that the Xbox is the only system that lets you install games to a flash drive, and transfer them, ect, along with all the other shit. I've owned a PS3 for years, and I've recently bought a second one, and indeed did a tranfer of data to the other console. I know exactly wtf I'm talking about, most people here don't, so I decided to shed some light, and you tried to punk me out?

I don't understand how you thought you'd succeed when you pretended to post a contradiction which actually wasn't as YOU clearly stated.

Second, I never even singled out the PS3. I mentioned both next gen consoles, NEITHER of which has the capabilities of the Xbox 360 when it comes to usage of HDD or Flash Drives when it comes to installing and yes transferring games. Because you can install games at your whim on the 360, and because you can move those game installs via a Flash Drive, or even install them and play them from a flash drive, it has superior HDD functionality and superior transfer capabilities. WTF part of that is even remotely wrong? You have some broken english in your post, so there might be a communication error here, or maybe I didn't present myself clearly, but I don't think I wrote what you think I wrote?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

What about the memory cards? Are they non-functional with this model? I don't see any slots.

Memory cards became obsolete recently. They were always a little slow and usually hold very little. In the last dashboard update, MS unlocked thumb drives up to 16gb. They are very quick, and you already have one....so yeah, memory cards are useless, but they have been for a little while now. :P

NO NO, NO NO NO.

It doesn't matter. I mean you're just covering for the fact that the Xbox 360 has more USB ports and a higher spec wireless. Everyone knows once you've got a higher spec on something the other consoles useless. So wireless on PS3/Wii? Useless! Stop diverting attention away from the fact that Microsoft is N baby, N! Furhermore having more USB ports makes the console like 150% more useful than the PS3 and Wii.

Tease.

It has 2 USB ports on front and 3 in back.  On the new 360, there is also an addition slot to plug Kinect into.  They added two more USB ports to replace the two slots for memory cards.  And yes, memory cards are now a thing of the past with the 360.

To transfer data, you use the USB ports and the free Microsoft transfer cable (which I already have from when I upgraded from an 20gb to a 60gh HDD).  You connect one end to the old HDD and connect it to one of the 360's USB ports and insert a disc.  That's it.
