of course its possible... its possible that you will go to mars one day.

i will never go to mars so it may be possible at one piont in time but it will never happen to me do u want me to go to mars?

u think it's possible for it to 100m but do u think it will happen?

If you dont think it will pass 100m post where you think it will end up with some reasoning

Well 2009 and 2010 will be the peak years for the PS3.  After that it will be declining sales.  So no I dont think it will.

Not necessarily.

We have no idea how it will do when it reaches $199.

well... er... yeah....

it was my opinion... not a fact.     he was asking our opinions... so i posted it.

but you are suggesting then that the PS3 could peak in 2011 or beyond... that would be very very strange.

why would that be strange, the ps3 is getting just as much 3rd party support as the xbox360, and both the PS3 and the xbox360 are not even at the lowest price they can get this generation both the xbox360 elite and the PS3 can drop in price . yes the xbox360 has the arcade but that is in of itself a great selling component, which once it reaches $99.00 it's a no brainer to get one, but also the elite will still be selling. great because it has a great sale's market price that can be further reduced.

just like the PS3. I think that both the xbox360 and the PS3 will reach 100+ million before everything is done and overwith until the last xbox360 and PS3 leaves the factory's

Nah, I'd say 70-75 million MAX.

PS1 only barely edged past the 100 million mark and it sold quite strong, for nearly 10 years. Sony can say PS3 will sell ten years all they want, but ultimately it's up to the consumers if that comes to fruition, and looking at the sales right now, it doesn't seem likely that it'll have the legs to carry on for another 7 years.

Sony usually keeps their console on the market for 10yrs ...  I believe that what really slowed down the PS2 sales was the fact that this gen started in 2005 which i believe slowed down the PS2 sales considerably resulting in only really 5 good solid years of sales...

...I dont see new consoles releasing till atleast 2013 or 2014 or even later so that will mean that the PS3 will have about 3-4 more years...

You are totally mixing cause and effect.

Hardware sells because there is demand for it, not because Sony wants it to sell. The previous generation had to end because there was no longer sufficient demand for the PS2.

Also, there were only two earlier Sony consoles, and they also happened to be the two best selling home consoles ever in the history of gaming.

What do you think, what made them sell for such a long time? The magical "Sony" logo on their casing?  Or the exceptional demand (which the PS3 lacks)?

Obviously, if it would be a matter of wanting really hard, every company would keep their consoles on the market for ten years,   or more, too bad it is useless if people don't buy it.

Exactly WHAT will make people buy the PS3 for another 3-4 years, considering that even more successful consoles than it, lost momentum after a lot shorter time?

Interesting thread, good to see some predictions and debate that doesn't boil down to fanboys crying and screaming.

My first reaction to the question was no way, but after reading some comments and thinking about it.... I'm still going to say no way. I just think one of the big 3 will be going next gen by around 2012 and usually once one company jumps to the next gen they all will follow suit sooner than later. So Sony would have to sell around 70million PS3s in the next 3 years (assuming PS3 are selling considerable numbers until 2013). I just don't see that happening but I have seen crazier things happen :)

$98 PS3 would do it.

MASSIVE LOLZ, a 199 will do it and then some.

logics says duh, fanboys say otherwise,

ps: I believe ps3 sold the 33.5, just going off these shortages.

It would be, but the generation has been full of strange things happening.

We've seen how it performs at $299, $199 could be just the same, greater or even worse... Depending on what they bring with the cut.

Looking at years 9 and 10 of the PS2 I'm guessing PS3 will sell less than 10 million consoles total in years 9 and 10 of its life (since it's been tracking less than PS2 so far). So it would have to sell ~60 million consoles in 4 years or in other words it'll have to do Wii like numbers to make it.

that i think is the big problem, this is not the same as the previous generation's:

do you think the companies are in a big hurry to release whole new  system's when the current one's are still selling great!

and before you say that the other two are selling great and that the PS3 is not

the Wii is released in 38 countries world wide

the PS3 is released in 36 countries world wide

the xbox360 is released in 21 countries world wide.

as for demand that the PS3 lack's, new's for you that has been said since this whole generation started, and the demand is still as strong if not stronger now than ever before , the PS3's getting just as much support as the xbox360 from 3rd party, and yet they have not up and quit supporting the PS3. the PRICE is just now $299.00

it's not even at the lowest price it can go, and there is shortages for the PS3 right now . so there is

(Or the exceptional demand (which the PS3 lacks)?

I think many see the exact opposite. not to mention were in a recession

the companies are in no hurry to start where as these system's are still selling.
