Forums - Sony Discussion - Playstation Classic Announced, releasing in December 3rd with 20 games pre-loaded and cost $99

I just noticed that the controllers lack analogue sticks.
I can't remember how important the sticks were... So were there any big Playstation One games that mandated the need for them? Might limit the games Sony is going to pick out as well.

My problem with these mini consoles is that they usually have games that I will never bother to play (and lack games that I want to play), so they're kind of a risky purchase for me.

Only PlayStation classic to require analogue sticks was Ape Escape.

Sony is just on a roll this week for me. Why can't PS4 play these? I would have paid $999.99 in games for PS1 if they just fraking let me play them on PS4. I will not spend $99.99 on this pointless device. If I wanted an extra device hooked up, I could bring out my, PS1, PS2, or PS3.

I doubt that. You had more than enough options to buy these digital PS1 classics on your PS3 or PSVita or PSP all these years, if they were important to you.

I already have them on PS3/Vita, but I would gladly buy them again for PS4, especially if they put in trophy support. I have no problem buying media again in new formats. I like having all of my stuff organized on one device or format. I have rebought movies on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and PS Video. I have original PS2 games, that I re-bought as remasters on PS3, and rebought again as remasters or PS2 on PS4 games.

If Sony put up the entire PS1 catalogue today, at $9.99 a pop, I could easily come up with 100 titles I would rebuy.

My point was that the PS3 was expensive because it was expensive to make. Not because of Sonys research and marketing.

Let me chime into your discussion here.

Forget 'expensive' or 'cheap'.
Everything Sony invests to get a product into the hands of consumers needs to be recuperated somehow. And then some, so that they make a profit.
That does include research and development, manufacturing, shipping, packaging, marketing, logistics, etc.

For standard consoles, the situation is a bit different in that they don't need to make all of it back on the initial console sale, because they can do it with software sales over time.
But for a product like this, that's not the case. There will only ever be one single transaction for this product. So the revenue of this product needs to cover everything and anything that they normally could have made back with additional software sales, subscriptions, etc.
On top of that there's the licensing fee for the 20 games, excluding the I.P.'s they own.

I don't know why it got this exact price tag. But selling it for, or around, the manufacturing cost of the system would surely lose them a lot of money.

Thank you for clearing that up, I couldn't find the right words.

You can usually mod them and install your own games. Which is what I have done with my NES and SNES Classics and will do to this as well.

Ape Escape is confirmed not to be on the console then. Haha

Oh, you're right.

We actually know more about the lineup than those 5 games. NO APE ESCAPE

And you'd probably be the only one that wouldn't call Sony a bunch of money-grabbing assholes for coming up with an excuse to force people to re-buy a game that many people have already bought twice (hard copy and digital copy) just to play it on a new console. The vast majority of people who would be interested in playing PS1 games on their PS4 would rather just play the digital copies they already own than pay for a new one with trophy support. Almost no one, besides you, is going to spend $10 a pop for a PS1 game with trophy support. Never mind the work that would have to go in to adding trophy support would probably never justify the profits of a $10 price tag, and that's if they even had the rights or means to modify the game in the first place. Unfortunately for many of these titles, the source code has been lost, and they would have to be reverse-engineered in order to make any modifications, and that's just the start of it. But again, this is yet another instance of you glossing over a technical challenge that you don't think is a big deal because you don't actually have a good understanding.

Are you sure your last name isn't Dunning-Kruger? How come you keep getting mad at Sony for not doing something you want them to do that clearly doesn't have mass appeal?

The controller inputs look like standard USB connectors. Hopefully we can plug in any controller type, that would be awesome

Like others have said, it depends on the lineup whether this does well. Considering Sony owns the franchises, you would think GT, Twisted Metal, and LoD are no brainers. Definitely should get Silent Hill, MGS, and Soul Reaver on it, too.
