I was close to buying Wolfenstein II on PS4/PC but it came out during a busy time, and I don't mind waiting if it's only half a year and it's not a big release for me.
I have no choice but to get Dragon Quest XI on PS4 because God knows what Square Enix is doing with that, even though it was announced for Switch well in advance. And like many games, I would've just gotten it on PC if I didn't want a physical copy.

Now that I think about it, seems ironic that we're stitting here discussing value for money right after the steam summer sale just took place.

I thought the same thing you did...till I was holding the 60 dollar version in my hand while looking at a 20 dollar version that runs better.  Day and date to at least match pricing would  have made all the difference in the world TBH.

I'm sure I'm missing something here.  Gamestop shows Wolfenstein 2 for PS4 listed as $39.99 (not $19.99) when I look it up:

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus by Bethesda Softworks

BUY NEW

$39.99

So I have come to a realization...and I have a story to go with it.  Maybe developers see this as well, and anticipate sales not being worth the downgraded port.  This is something that many have said throughout the Switch's life so far, but it really hit home today...

So as some of you already know, I got a PS4 Pro soon after picking up God of War on launch day.  As I worked my way through Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Resident Evil 7 in 4k HDR, I felt my Switch calling to me as Octopath Traveler's release neared.  I also noticed that my launch PS4 was just sitting there doing nothing...time for a trade in at gamestop (something I rarely do, but it is free money for an extra console).

I decided to trade it for in store credit for 165 dollars as opposed to the 108 cash offer.  If I buy games I planned on buying anyway, I am still ending up with cash in my bank account in the end, right?

I scooped up Wolfenstein 2 as I decided that the portability was more important to me than playing in 4k (bet you thought this was gonna be about power didn't you =P).  I noticed Hyrule Warriors and considered buying that as well (for my collection), but there was one more title to obtain...Ys VIII...which was nowhere to be found.

Feeling defeated, as the point of this was to use the in store credit to buy the games rather than my bank accout, I began to look for another game...but found little that interested me.

Then I had a thought, just get a PS4 game.  So I walked to the PS4 section and began to browse...and that is when it hit me like a ton of bricks.  As I stood there with my 60 dollar Switch copy of Wolfenstein 2, I see the same game available on PS4 for 19.99 (with 4k and HDR support).

I stared at it a minute...thinking I want to play this on Switch.  But how could I justify passing on a superior console verion (far superior with my new Pro), just for supporting Nintendo and portability.  I almost just walked away, but then I did the math.  Had Ys VIII been over there, I would have spent 180 bucks with a 165 dollar discount for 3 games.  Not bad...but...I could could get more if I bought for PS4 instead...so I browsed some more...

I ended up buying Persona 5, Monster Hunter World, Assassin's Creed Origins, and Dragonball FighterZ (another Switch port I was holding out for) all for the grand total of 160 bucks...so I basically got them for free with 5 dollars to spare.  Had I gone for 180 like the 3 Switch games, I would have had 5 PS4 games to 3 Switch games.

And the funny thing is, I DID NOT EVEN BUY WOLFENSTEIN 2.  There very game I was looking at all of a sudden got pushed aside by a wider array of games that caught my interest.  This brought to my attention another factor, the Switch just does not offer a lot of the games I wish to play.  I always knew that my PS4 would offer more, but even the 3rd party games that did come to Switch got pushed to the wayside for other games I was more interested in once I opened my mind to the idea.

Actually none of your math is making sense to me.  You say that instead of buying 3 Switch games, you bought 5 PS4 games for less money.  But, you only listed 4 PS4 games.  I assumed that meant you also bought Wolfenstein 2 for PS4, but you go on to say that you didn't buy Wolfenstein 2 at all.  Or did you mean not at all for Switch, but yes for PS4?  Or is there a different PS4 game you bought, but didn't list?

According to Gamestop's website:  Persona 5 $49.99, DragonballZ $59.99, Assassin Creed Origins $59.99, Monster Hunter World $59.99 = $229.96.  So those 4 (not 5) PS4 games would not be cheaper than 3 Switch games.

Yeah. I have the best version of each console. It sucks paying more for an inferior version. I tell myself that the portability will make it worth it. It's not true, though. And sometimes a Switch port will cost more than a game originally cost years ago!

My second biggest problem is game size. I have a 256GB memory card. Nintendo titles are pretty small but third party titles are often 20GB+. Makes you think twice about going digital.

Gamestops website is incorrect.

FighterZ was 40

Persona was 50

Monster Hunter was 30

Assassin's Creed was 40

Also gamestop has base PS4 store credit trade in at 135, they gave me 165.  The Switch games cost 180, if I would have gotten the three.  If I spent 180 on PS4 games, I would have had 5 instead of 4.

And no I still do not have Wolfenstein because due to the larger selection on the PS4, I found other games I was more interested in.  Had I gotten it, it would have been 20 at my gamestop.

And the Switch being out for a year and a half argument is null and void, as all of these games came out on PS4 during rhe Switches lifespan.  I am not pulling games from 3 years ago to compare.

See my previous reply.  The website is incorrect, it was 20 new.  Just like the website says PS4 trade in for store credit is 135, but when I did it they gave me 165.

So did the Wii U... which failed. Also did the Vita as companion device for PS4 games... which also failed.

Many people seem to value the added portability and independence of the Switch by removing the necessity to keep close to a base station.

The VITA can be used anywhere wifi is available.  I played Horizon Zero Dawn over remote play from my mobile hotspot during my break at work just the other day.  Therefore it does not need to be close to the base station at all.

The reason the VITA failed is because it lacked 1st party support outside of the first year or so of its life and remote play itself, while working great in practice, was viewed as a side feature.  The system was mainly viewed as a stand alone handheld so the content it had in that department is what people looked to.  If you only wanted remote play, the price of all the extra stuff that the handheld included may have been too much.  It never had to be close to the base station so your point is irrelevant in that regard.

What people like about the Switch is the ease of Switching between the two modes and the fact that, unlike the VITA, being able to play at home and on the go is its primary advertising point.  I would say how it is advertised has more to do with it than anything else.

I don't think remote play would have been that appealing, even if it was better marketed. If you had just the Vita, would you really go for a PS4 or a PSTV just for remote play? Or would you buy a PS4 just because it has a great catalog of games?

And even then, the Vita was limited because, as you said, remote play's effectiveness depended on the Wifi. At least with the Switch, you can still play Mario Odyssey, BotW, or most other games while at the park because the Switch doesn't require wifi to work undocked.

OP: i'll counter your story with my own :) i have a ps4 pro and i picked up doom at launch. the day after launch i play snap map with some friends and the 1st level of the game. Really good game, couldn't wait to play more. then the weekend was over. Then i had work, then i had to go to the gym, then i had an anniversary. time after time life came up and i wasn't playing my new game. 3 months later i replayed the 1st level. It was pretty awesome. it was also the last time i played doom on the ps4.

fast forward to the release of the nintendo switch. picked up zelda played it for a couple days then went to work. The day after that i realized the switch is portable enough to take to work and hook up to a cpu monitor. I've played more videogames now than i have in YEARS. It is a gaming godsend. Also, i finally got to finish doom. Definitely some bugs there, but it was still awesome. Really hope the sequel comes to switch. Kudos to panic button. Just this past week i finished dragon quest builders before octopath came out. I get to play for about an hour a day on my lunch break and i love it. So, to your point yes. It does pose a problem for many gamers to justify spending the extra money for inferiority, BUT in some cases, the portability of the switch is worth it. Can't wait until stick of truth in september :)

Now, in all honestly, your point stands with plenty of merit. i get i'm not the "ideal gamer" cause i don't have the time as an adult to devote to the hobby, but i thought it may be refreshing, insightful, or even just amusing to see the flip side of the coin. And hell, before i was playing games on the switch i was still getting games on the ps4.... just not playing them (facepalm) so i guess i was still an avid consumer. Someday i'm sure i'll get to the pile of ps4 games i've had for over a year and haven't touched; prey, horizon 0 dawn, injustice 2, resident evil 7, and final fantasy 15. (damn black friday sales!)

Side note, if they could have made a more powerful system and made it the size of the wii or the same power and the size of the pstv i'd be singing mostly the same praises.

I have said Nintendo needed to fund there 3rd party ports for day and date releases for a while now.  It would both help third party sales as well as heal damaged relationships from previous generations.

Absolutely. The big thing is that this is Nintendo's problem to solve, if they choose to solve it. The approach of building an install base without third party support early on is silly IMO, because it doesn't result in a large demographic on their current console for third party publishers to sell against. Over 17 million consoles sold and the only third party million seller is the Skyrim remastered. Not a good look for Nintendo if they want day and date down-ports of AAA games.

Thats not true, Nintendo recently said that even some Indie games are around 1m on Switch, also games like Super Bomberman R, Fifa, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle are also most likly are around 1m. In short 3rd party games are selling quite good on Switch, much better than on last few Nintendo platforms.

I just picked up the last physical copy of Octopath Traveler at gamestop today. Loving it!

Now I am back to considering getting those Switch games I talked talked about earlier, further inflating my library and emptying my wallet. Even thinking about double dipping Draginball FighterZ when it releases on Switch because dealing with the wifi on remote play has gotten old already. Nothing beats running the games natively on Switch for on the go. Maybe I was a little wrong about the price thing, but it is still an issue that will keep people from buying those versions if portable is an after thought for them, I still stand by that. Just not as heavily as I did when I made the topic.

In fact, I am pretty sure going by my sales trends is just a bad idea lol. I am way to much of an impulse buyer...

Are some indie games an indication of AAA Western game performance? Games like Wolf 2 aren't going to continue to get ported if they don't cover the opportunity cost of doing something else more profitable. That was what I was getting at.
