Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft joins DD bandwagon... if internet connection is lost, game pauses

If it stops piracy then I'm all for it. But if it only stops used game sales then I'm against it and won't sign up.

A system like this on consoles can't be too far.

This.

Wouldn't surprise me if at least the 360's successor has some manner of blocking second-hand sales where by you need to link a disc to your console, or Live account, and always be connected to play.  Microsoft always seems to be the forerunner in all things involving limiting and milking gamers. =\

This is fucking retarded, when I go for a relaxing holiday break from school, I usually visit my birthplace, which is a really small village set high in mountains, or our cottage near one of our country's largest lakes. Guess what, there isn't a fucking internet connection available. I take my notebook with me, so I can play few nice games and relax from the usual uni/work rutine. Now I can't, because some bloody bastards invent another great idea to screw with customers.

I think it will probably start as an optional system. You can download games and they'll be attached to your account. Then they will start giving advantages to people who buy games in this way (maybe free online play, or more likely smaller things like online game saves as Ubi is doing). When enough people are used to this, they will push it for retail games as well. Later on, retail games will disappear altogether (or partly, by having a console SKU with an optical drive, and a cheaper one without).

With all the failure rate around these days, I would honestly laugh my ass of, if you really needed to link the disc to your console. Account can be the choice, but imagine if you'd get banned and lost access to your whole game collection. And these things do happen.

This is why I dont like DD. If they implement this "feature" where the game pauses due to no internet connection then count me out. Its just another way to control the consumer and treat them like an animal.

pausing the game because you lost connection is just stupid. I do think that requiring some sort of online activation will be one of the solutions in the future, but I also think that it's a bit early to enforce it in a way annoys the player.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Welcome to the future of gaming. Similar models will start showing up over the next few years. I give it 5 years before it starts becoming the main method of acquiring games.

As for people worried about the price always being full price, the company can choose a time directly when to reduce the price, or choose discount weekends and specials.

I'm not sure about this. If you lose connection temporarily I don't want the game to pause and cause a loss of immersion. I already have a problem with EA's system on Dragon Age Origins where everytime my connection has a temporary blip a message comes up saying it can't connect to the server. Completely ruins immersion, is just plain frustrating and at one point actually caused my game to crash.

I much prefer Steam's checking system which only has you ensuring you account is valid every so often. Not all the bloody time as a lot of service providers in the UK actively throttle bandwidth at set times.
