Mario game released during the holiday season after a Wii price cut, that was advertised towards the Wii's core audience?

Nostalgic reasons although i bought it this week and i am pleasantly surprised it is a good game one of the few and far between for this system.

It has sold so much because it is so appealing. It is an entry into the most popular video game franchise ever (barring Pokemon), it's the first time in a decade and a half that this franchise has manifested in a 2D form on consoles, and it plays up the system's local multiplayer capability. Basically it's aimed at an under-served segment of the market and has a guarantee of quality, making it very appealing to people who otherwise cautiously spend their gaming dollars.

It's a 2D Mario on a Nintendo home console, and an extremely popular Nintendo home console, at that.

There are millions of good reasons why this game has sold well, I don't see how it's that surprising.

Very simply, 2D Mario games have always sold well and there hasn't been a home console 2D Mario game for a very long time. The Wii is currently very popular, has a very large userbase who certainly like Nintendo first party games, it went on sale just before Christmas, it has local multiplayer and although it didn't get 99% on Metacritic it's still an awesomely fun game that is going to benefit from positive word of mouth.

it would have sold 10m just based on the first half of your sentance. The second half (holidays on) is just why it did it in 8 weeks.

Anyways, NSMBWii sold 10m for the same reason tetris, super mario bros, pac-man, and other similar games sell. It is simple to pick up and play, (run, jump is the core mechanic) and is fun, however it also allows for a much more "hardcore" style of play (speedruns and such). Nostalgia may have caused some people to pick it up, but since Wii is only owned by kids and grandparents I don't see how anyone could have nostalgia for a game they never played.

But OT: It sold 11 millions already because is a great game. But it's not just a great game. It's a great game for everyone.
