Forums - Sales Discussion - Super Mario Galaxy barely moves Wii Hardware

@thetonestarr

There is no point in making a well reasoned response such as this, those people have already made their minds up and nothing will make them change them. Great post though, especially point 4.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

@Nairu and NJ5

Thanks for the compliments. ^_^

@Nairu

You're right, but I felt it had to be said. I mean, think about it. Maybe these kids won't see the light, but at least nobody else has the chance of being pulled into their slough of treachery. ;)

I know the future, and I know the ps3 will take over all markets. Just wait, you will have a massive breakdown.

So now you're trying to backpedal? The only possible way anybody could take the obviously biased and extremely negative statements you've been making this entire thread is as "trolling" or "Nintendo-hating". Also "No one is saying the Wii needs a savior". You yourself said that the Wii needs a savior. Please, try paying even the remotest amount of attention to what's actually going on before you start making claims. And I think it's hilarious how you completely contradicted yourself.

W29 - "Nintendo is in trouble."

1.) DMeisterJ - "Everyone has been heralding SMG as the Wii's savior for sales and blah, blah, blah, but the truth is it wasn't. "

2.) DMeisterJ - "The wii does need a savior, it's falling, and fast in Japan. "

3.) DMeisterJ - "So it does need a savior before it sells below the PS3."

@W29

You are trolling. Stop.

@this thread

(1) Japan is a handheld and casual market at the present moment in time. Console hardcore sales are going to be difficult to see doing well right off the bat, period. Give SMG a few months' time to pick up, and I guarantee it will. I also guarantee Ratchet and Clank will do far better in Japan, but that's a different story.

(2) Japan is a very minor-sized market compared to NA/EU. Remember, out of the 115M+ PS2s that have sold, only about 22M sold in Japan. About twice that has sold in America and Europe, respectively. Given that consideration and the fact that NA/EU both are much more hardcore- and console-oriented, SMG will flourish once it launches in each region. Japan does tend to decide who wins the console wars, which is why...

(3) Frankly, it doesn't matter for Nintendo how well the Wii does in relation to the PS3 for the rest of this generation. It already has more than a 3-to-1 lead over the PS3 after a year. The PS3 would have to climb to an average sales of 50k+ every single week in order to even have a chance at beating out the Wii at this point. Is that going to happen? Not a chance. This generation is already decided in Japan. America? Not certain yet. Europe? I haven't a clue. But Japan? Leading time is over for Sony, and we all know Microsoft isn't closing the gap any time soon.

(4) Have you guys even paid attention to launch sales for games in America? Ace Combat 6 and Ratchet and Clank, both selling to hardcore gamers in the country that contains the most "hardcore gamers", and the country with the largest market... sold barely 200K combined in their launch week. So, in the vastly more difficult (and smaller) market, you call 250k a flop? Get out of here. The Orange Box didn't even sell much better, for crying out loud! Heavenly Sword flopped, LAIR really flopped, Metroid Prime 3 barely sold more in America. If 250k+ in Japan is a flop, then anything below 500k in America is a titanic failure. What? Only three games have done better than 500k in launch week in America this entire year? Madden '08, Guitar Hero III, and Halo 3? Goodness, goodness. And I could've sworn people were saying this was the year for gaming.

 My first comment was that everyone said this would be the Wii's savior and it wasn't.  I wasn't calling it a savior.

 My second comment was after someone posted that I said the Wii needs a savior, which, AFTER looking at SMG sales numbers and how it was at 21k a few weeks ago, I believe it does.

And my third comment was when someone said the wii needs a savior and I said it does before it falls below PS3 sales which it almost did two weeks ago.

And for future reference, don't quote one line out of a post and then call it contradicting my self.

 (1)  So Japan is a handheld market now that the Wii isn't moving 70k units /week?  The PS3 is selling much better now than a few months ago, and even the 360 is moving more units than it was a few months ago.  It's not turning agains't consoles, just the Wii.

(2) and (3) how can you say Japan tends to decide what wins the wars, then say it is a small market, then say it doesn't matter how the Wii does in the relation to the PS3 all within a few lines...  That my friend is contradicting yourself.

 (4) I never said SMG flopped!  I said that it sold 250k out of 500-600k.  I also said that it hit with a resounding thud to hardware sales which only picked up 10k from the prior week.

^oh yeah leo... isnt the PS3 supposed to sell more than Wii weekly worldwide starting a couple of weeks from now?... that prediction of yours seems to have dissappeared from your sig.

Could this be the start. I am just waiting for a little Wii backlash, honestly SMG is the only Wii title of consequence for this Holiday season. Sure SMG looks like a great game if you like platformers, but nothing else of high quality, high sales potential is releasing for months.  I am also not surprised by the lack of new hardware sales because of Wii. Nintendo fans have flocked to the Wii in droves like they did for the GCN. They dont wait for Mario, particularly when they already got Zelda. So now Mario releases and they already have there console.

I am just waiting for the press to start the wheres the beef like comments. Really the Wii is due for it. Wii/Wiimote promised a better way of playing games and that hasnt happened. When you look at the 360 and all the AAA titles that have released over the last couple of months (and continuing) the Wii is a pretty poor substitute, even the PS3 has a better overall library. Will any title other than SMG and WiiPlay (Not even a game) sell over 1 million total in October, November and December in North America?

Yeah yeah there is Wii Fit, but I doubt many gamers will be picking up WiiFit. It may have huge, but it doesnt fulfill the WiiMote promise. It doesnt give anything to gamers. It will sell to the people that think that it may help them lose weight. Many of those people may never purchase another game.

Libraries sell systems not individual games

Holy god, people. It was out for TWO DAYS when the last week ended. Give it a week, Jeez. It comes out in the States on Tuesday too.

Do note that the Wii is still selling over 250k consoles a week worldwide. Supply constraints are still a real threat to expansion.

Last update: Week ending November 3, 2007

Personally, I find DMeister and Leo-J really funny in this thread ...

Super Mario Galaxy pushes sales of the Wii to a level the PS3 has hardly seen (roughly 4 times the average weekly sales for the PS3) and they think that it "Barely Moves Wii Hardware." In a week or two Super Mario Galaxy will have outsole every PS3 game in Japan and they consider it a flop. Indirectly they're (basically) agreeing that the PS3 is a massive failure in Japan ...

In my opninion, mario galaxy did bad. I'm not saying the game sucks, i'm just very dissappointed in sales. Because I thought it would move 100.000 wii's.

I hope people aren't gonna put words in my mouth like: Kratos said Super Mario Galaxy bombed. I'm not saying that ok.

Also about 360 outselling ps3. It's a one time thing I believe so get over it. The same with mario galaxy not selling extremely well (in my opinion).
