Forums - Sony Discussion - Heavy Rain Probably Won't be a Success says Pachter

The game is a niche title, that's why it wont sell. Does he means that all publishers should start making COD clone ver 200 FPS and GTA clone ver 300 to even stay in the market? I would stop playing games altogether if the game shelves are all full of FPS.

Heavy Rain is already a success cause its the type of innovative games that moves the industry forward and doesnt need high sales to prove its value. I hope more games like this come out.
Even with only 100k sales this game would be discussed more than the majority of others.

There are two ways it can be discussed if it only sell 100K copies.

1. A great innovative game that is ahead of its time and doesn't sell.

2. An example of gigantic flop that other developers should take notice and avoid making the same mistake.

You probably see point 1. However, I think it would be point 2 if it does end up with 100K sold.

What was the last game that was remembered positively when it's sold 100K copies?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

i think it will be a commercial flop too. Really, Feb and March are pretty packed - most people will probably just pass on this, and go for the big franchise games (e.g., final fantasy, bioshock, god of war, etc.). It may get a week or two in the limelight but after that, it will just be overshadowed by the hype surround god of war and final fantasy and subsequently people will just forget about it. Only the people who have been long anticipating this game will buy it.

If it gets mixed reviews then it will certainly be a commerical failure. It's only chance of accumulating deent sales depends (a) recieving high reviews and (b) word of the mouth (akin to valkyria chronicles and demon's souls).

Initially I was quite impressed with this game but it development seems to have dragged for a long time now, and it just looks pretty plain now.

you know, I've been on the forums for over a year now. That's the first time I've ever actually seen Pachter.

I think Pachter actually made some good points here, but also the 4th guy - the one who was always off camera did as well. I do not think Heavy Rains fate is yet determined, it all depends on how good the story and word of mouth is, combined with the reviews and marketing, and whether they can connect the gameplay with something that sounds to interesting to pass up for the masses.

I do think it is absolutely possible, in Japan the visual novel genre is huge and I think that potential base absolutely exists in the West. The problem in the West, is the average gamer and even the average reviewer and developer does not even know what a Visual Novel is, hence all the rhetoric about folks not knowing how to even classify Heavy Rain as a game. They say its "totally new", and its not totally new, its just totally new in the West and done by a Western team to Western tatstes.. but the genre itself is hugely successful in Asia.

So HR definatly has the possibility for commercial success, the key is clueing in the potential audience to the fact that this is in fact a game they should try. Sounds easy, but will likely prove to be very difficult.

For once, I agree with him.

I don't see this game having a huge appeal at all.

well, for a big project like heavy rain I think they need to sell 1.5m-2m within a year to make a profit ..

I'm personally not sure if they can reach that, because there doesn't seem to be much incentive to buy it new/full price (only single player, under 10h for one playthrough and probably under 20h to see all content) and it's heavy cinematic part could polarize too much for it's own good

1-1.5m lifetime should be possible imo though - still I hope it takes off and shatters my low expectations ;)

Does a single individual in the entire world think otherwise? Pure gold from Pachter, as usual.

Pachter haters are sad, he is asked a question so he answers. And lately most of his statements are actually logical and well thought. So give it a break.

Also some of the replyies in this thread are completly offtopic, maybe you should first watch the video, before you start spreading this bullshit fire all around.
