Maybe that's true on Metroid Prime but on Super Metroid you have absolutely nothing to guide yourself to the correct path

You have a map. Take notes.
Super Metroid was far easier in that sense than the original Metroid where you had to either memorize it or draw your own map.
This is a game of patience and good memory. You must take notes, EXPLORE, take notes, and try weapons on various areas/hidden walls, etc.
Plus, if you feel you're just going to give up, then download a filled in map. ;) But, I consider that cheating.

Well the game is about exploration, you search about for the route while knowing the general direction. Usually it involves the use of a recently gained technology. |
Yeah, it's important for Metroid Prime to always be using the technology you acquired last to try and test the areas. They generally won't try and deceive you, like Super Metroid very much will.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
You'll get used to it. The whole overworld is like one giant Zelda temtple, really.
Your map is your friend. Get used to using it alot until you become very familiar with a particular area.
I would suggest having a good look at your map, the question-marked area that you need to get to and some of the rooms closest to the question-marked areas that you have already been too. There's bound to be an exit in one of those rooms that will lead you on the path you need to go. It might be a door or maybe just a well-hidden morph ball tunnel. After a while you will get accustomed to the "Metroid-logic". The one thing I love about the Prime series of games is that I never felt cheated when I found a solution to something I was stuck on, I always felt the solution was logical and it was my own fault for not figuring it out sooner.
Out of interest, where are you and what's the prompt that you are getting telling you?
To hell with linear games, bahh gamers these days are way to spoiled
Nowdays it takes only about 5 minutes before gamers complain about being stuck... hell I remembered when it took atleast a week before the complaining began
If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing (mostly)
And shepherds we shall be,
For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints
thats what metroid is 100% about!
Just look at your map and dont spend to much time in 1 spot.
oh and dont use a guide it takes almost all the fun out of metroid games
