Metroid should have less liberty?

You have a map. Take notes.

Super Metroid was far easier in that sense than the original Metroid where you had to either memorize it or draw your own map.

This is a game of patience and good memory. You must take notes, EXPLORE, take notes, and try weapons on various areas/hidden walls, etc.

Plus, if you feel you're just going to give up, then download a filled in map. ;) But, I consider that cheating.
