So which game of the listed will be a big system seller ?
revovichfan12 said: what is microsoft thinking. Everyone needs bluray to experience Avatar at home ;)... But seriously. I bet the one thing that sony will have that microsoft won't have this coming holiday season is 3D bluray and there may be some games coming out that will capitalize on that. Sony has already said every ps3 will be 3d compatible. Bluray can also fit more information on it which means they are cheaper to make. 1 bluray is cheaper than two dvds (mass effect 2 :P) |
Good point. From this prospective size does matter. The more DVDs the bigger the production costs so that eats into profits.
I don't know exactly how the whole thing works but say, for example that FFXIII comes out on four DVDs.
My guess is that equates to 4x production costs for x360's FFXIII being sold at the same price as the PS3 version.
Is the game then sold at a higher price on the x360 to recuperate costs?
Doesn't really matter to MS, I suppose. They can afford losses.
But sure as hell matters to pubishers packaging the game.
Then again maybe all this was covered with SquareE when the deal was struck with MS.
With Forza (I think), FFXIII and ME2 that's three multi discs games on x360 in a short time - that I know of.
If the rate of multi disc games increase dramatically then it may be a problem but if MS don't seem to care about this neither should I.
Lurker said: No need for blu-ray yet Mass Effect 2 makes you swap discs 3 times. Ok. |
I think it is twice.
It could be ten times, and you'd still be getting up once every four hours at most, walking two meters, and changing a disc.
This as opposed too $200 more for your console and slower maximum read times.

you may be right. but you still can't deny that it is another convenience to have a choice to not swap discs. i call it a plus for the ps3, but not necessarily a minus for x360. just depends on your preferences. ;-]

I can agree with that.
As you said, it just comes down to whether or not you feel that convenience is worth it.

Have you ever bought blank DVD? I, the stupid consumer at the very end of the profit-chain, can get a blank DVD for $0.19. Now imagine Mr. Microsoft going to a DVD manufacturer saying: "Hello, we need 8 million blank DVDs"... So MS probably pays less than $0.10 for a DVD, which is sold at retail for $59.99.
The costs for DVDs are soooo tiny. It won't matter for anyone.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
WoW.....dont tell me MS is still butt hurt about their little HDDVD getting killed by blu ray? and didn't they said that HDMI wasn't needed either before?.....=.=

Not necessarily, the more DVD's you buy, the better the deal you get. I can get one DVD for $0.25 or 8 for $1 if bought in bulk.

For pennies? No point, at best it would be a rounding error.

Microsoft gets royalties for every third party game made for the Xbox 360 console, they'd actually make money on FFXIII's release than if it wer not.

Obviously not enough or they wouldn't even consider releasing it on the system in the first place.

A dozen games for a system in it's 5th year is a lot better then most would have predicted in 2005, at that time some people were questioning whether DVD would be enough for "2nd" generation games and here we are 5 years later guess which systems running games better, why it's the DVD based PC and Xbox 360.

which also means cant fit in one dvd disk so there is a necessity for blu-ray. the days of disk swapping died last generation as well as the need for more than 2 disks. when was the last time we saw a game that needed 3 disks? sh*t the last console to need that was dreamcast. when i play a game the only time i disk swap is to change to a completely new game other then that i usaully keep a game in my ps3 till i finish it completely without the need of disk swaps |
Onimusha DOD on PS2 had 2 DVD9 discs, Xenosaga had 2 DVD dscs SO3 Directors Cut also was on two DVD last gen on PS2 DVD was close to the limit on some other games last gen to.
