not that i don't appreciate the sales data (cause i really do) but i mostly come here for the community. as long as i can see hardware, use the forums, and maybe see LTD on software i have no qualms with the 3.0 plan,...i just will not be upgrading.

nobody seems to want to pay, retract or you'll become ign

ioi you should make an official thread on this announcement with a poll to see the general reception!

Well since this thread has been created, it makes sense to fill you in on some of the plans.

For VGC 3.0 we are planning 3 levels of access for data:

  • Free where you can see top 20 charts each week (top 50 rankings), top 10 per console (top 30 rankings), hardware, top 10 preorders (top 30 rankings), new features like milesones, weekly records. Will be enough to have an overview and to discuss trends.
  • Standard membership (~$99 per year) where you can see top 200 per week, top 50 per console, top 50 per publisher, top 100 preorders, extra comparison tools, maybe top level download charts, maybe no ads.
  • Premium membership (for industry) where you can see all data as well as some fancy tools for analysing revenues, year on year data, anticipation metrics plus much more.

So you won't HAVE to pay to view data but if you do subscribe it gives you access to more data. Unfortunately, the data-collection side to VGChartz has got to a point now where it is costing more to run than it is generating in ad revenue, therefore we need to move to a new costing model to continue to grow and improve the service. The data certainly won't be going anywhere but you'll only be able to see top-level data for free with the new site. It's more a case of adding new stuff and charging to use it than charging for what is already there.

seems like bugrimmar once again uncovers the truth before it happens!

so everyone, lets all go to BugriChartz instead...

....

um, when it comes up.

the idea is that you are not paying for the data but for the ability to easily access the data you want

Good answer! As long as the core content of today's site stays available for the non-subscribing, I think this is a cool idea. I was worried that you were going to remove a lot of cool features we have today that makes people come to the site, personally I use the "compare games" on week history a lot, and I was worried things like that would be tucked under the pay model.

More advanced reports is fine to charge for, that is after all a premium service that most regular people won't have that much use for anyway.

I agree with you that $8 a month, $99 a year, isn't a lot of money, but it's proven difficult to charge for web content to consumer users, but maybe there's a niche you can tap into.

And hopefully, stuff like TheSource's analysis articles will still be available, love those!

no there's plenty of info on the internet I could get for free. Why pay, when you can find the info for free. If I'm going to pay to view anything on the internet,it's going to be the adult kind of viewing. lol!!!!!

This is a bad idea in my opinion. Why would I pay to see the top 200,when all I care about is the top 10. you can also see top preorder's are most anticipated games on basically any other site. I just think you should have a free/premium membership model and leave the standard membership out!!!!!!!

We still see all the numbers on game's profiles right? Like each region, first 10 weeks, combined, etc.?

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

BugriChartz kinda makes me hungry.

And as for 3.0... well it's a shame that the current model isn't working from a financial point of view. But looking at the new model... well, It won't be too bad for free users (that'll be me ). All I need is top 10 per console anyways for my projects here on VGChartz.
