Not to sure about that. Every Japanese I know that plays FF’s also plays the DQ games, and FFIX was once pushed back because they didn’t want to release it to close to DQVII, obviously because they share(d) a fanbase.
During the years, unlike the DQ franchise, the FF franchise has become a lot smaller in Japan. In my opinion because they are all too different and sometimes fans can relate to it anymore, while DQ has always kept that traditional style, but I would be suprised if they didn’t share a big fanbase anymore. Ussually when people are done with a RPG and love the genre, they move to the next one and on the Wii there just aren’t many of them, and the few B-tiers (Graces, Xenoblade) that have been released and have all underperformed.

DQ's grown because it's maintained it's core audience through the years while simultaneously expanding into new players. I'd agree, this is something FF hasn't done so well... again it's more comparable to something like Mario. It's an established nostalgic player base mixed with a fresh young player base. And really, DQ changes quite a bit between installments itself, it's really a misnomer to imply it doesn't. DQV, DQVII and DQIX are just as different as FFV, FFVII and FFIX for example, if not moreso.
And pointing to Tales or Monolith Wii RPGs as underperforming doesn't really account for much when those same exact things have underperformed equally or worse on DS (Tales of Hearts, Tales of Innocence, Soma Bringer, etc). And yet, somehow DS is still home to the best selling Dragon Quest ever... think about that, it's pretty easy to guess why that is...
