Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Wii tie ratio is superior to PS3's

The Wii's tie ratio gets inflated during the holiday seasons due to really high hardware sales. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 takes the lead again (in that regard) in 2010.

Huh? Shouldn't high hardware sales lower the tie in ratio?

I noticed that also... he meant software for shure.

Quick question.

What is/was PS2's tie ratio?

I am not sure why seasonality is a consideration when you are looking at LTD tie-rates.

The stronger argument is the bundling one -- but of course all consoles have had plenty of bundles (how else would Sega have gotten Xbox 360 Superstars Tennis into the 2M seller club bunker).

The thing is, soooo much software is bought during the holiday period.  Only new owners are buying hardware, but both new and old owners are buying software.

This old thread does a decent job of showing that.  Notice how the average number of weeks between software purchases steadily climb throughout the year, and then rapidly fall during the fourth quarter.

EDIT: I just noticed he said hardware instead of software.  If he meant to say software, then what I said still applies.  If he really did mean to say hardware, then I have no clue what he meant.

The Wii can largely thank Japan for that. The Wii sells way more software there than the PS3 does, even without a bundled game. The PS3 is a nose ahead in other regions.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Japanese third parties providing the Wii with more support than western devs, or if Nintendo is just that crushingly huge in Japan (eg, Nintendo's publisher total for 2009 is greater than the next three largest publishers in Japan. In EU, it's a little smaller than the next three. In NA, it's smaller than the next two.).

Lower than Gamecube, slightly higher than Xbox1. But I'm not shure about this. I only now the Gamecube has a 9.0 tie ratio, I've read that somewhere already. And I think it was here on VGChartz.

It's been always like that. It's just it includes Wii Sports (to my knowledge.)

Which it probably should... because adding it is better then not adding it... and everyone has their bundles.

It's not perfect however.

it does include Wii Sports, and it should be included as it is a game people play. Just like the game that anyone bought with their PS3 or X360. However, it is a forced 1st party purchase, which from a 3rd party standpoint doesn't help out. However, tie ration doesn't really matter in the end, as a 60m userbase witha tie ratio of 5 will buy way more games than a 30m userbase with a tie ration of 6.

Now i disagree here slightly tie ratio sorta does matter.

A 60 million userbase of 5 will buy way more games in volume....

then a 30 million userbase of 6 will.

However... it does matter somewhat to people who make.... well not the best games.

Not bad gmes persay... but not say... Mario Kart Wii...

For example say both systems have a Wii sports.

Of the 300 million games purchased by the 60 Million base... 60 million are wii soirts.

While of the 180 million games purchased by the 30 million base... only 15 million are Wii sports.

Having a slightly higher tie ratio means that the mediocre to pretty good games have a better chance of sale on the poorer systems... if the top system has a LOT of really good games.

I meant to say software sales, really. I just had a tired day.

Give me time for an edit.

Eventually in the long run.

However when people first buy a system they often buy 2-3 games with the system.  This is a lot more then MOST people buy games at.

Even though Montana meant to say software... he's right.

Still, usually this would be just vs itself... and it shouldn't be passing PS3.  It's hard to tell if the PS3's attach ratio is unusually low, or Wii's unusually high.

I'd go with unusually hi considering the 360 considering the 360 is a "hardcore" machine... one year advanced... yet is only a game higher.
