I liked it a lot, but didn't love it. Story was dumb and was kinda obvious on what it's trying to say.

Like what? That tech and power hungryness is bad and you mustn't exploit nature and the indegenous cultures?

Or was it a comment about the artificial versus the natural?

Well, they made the Army/Navy seem like bad people, and with family in the military, I found it offensive. The story itself also had major similarities with the Iraq war from the media perspective, like going for precious resources, exploiting a group of people, pretending to be helping when you are destroying, ect.

I don't mean to start an off-topic debate, but that was how I viewed the plot, and why I found it dumb.

I would argue it made private military and general greedy corporations look bad, not the military itself. And the similarities in the Iraq war are partially there, but I thought it had far more in common with when the Europeans came over to the America's, or when Europe went... well anywhere during that period. That mixed in with a bit of Fern Gully.

Little slow and boring start but it got better towards the ending. All in one great movie. It was also my first 3D movie so it was very beatifull.

I don't think that it was cliché, plot points like "Gaia's vengeance", "the chief's daughter", or "unobtanium", are tropes, not clichés. A story is first and foremost supposed to be familiar and meaningful, not innovative. When there are innovative movies, no one likes them because they are too foreign, so they are soon forgotten as niche films, but when there are movies that embrace lots of these ancient formulas, the audience loves them, just a few over-analyzing nerdsnobs are complaining.

Can people not be so idealistic and just enjoy the movie?

They made this certain group of the army/navy look like bad people, but the main protagonist is a former marine and he's one of the kindest people in the whole movie. Who cares if you have family in the military? Both of my grandfathers served in World War II, and I have a cousin serving in Afghanistan. Did I get offended? No. I don't really give a crap. Stop kissing the military's butt. And it more closely resembled the Spanish colonization of the Americas rather than the American invasion of Iraq. If you really found the entire plot dumb because you were offended by it, then that's dumb.

Don't mind me, I'm kind of grumpy today. I'm just really pissed off that so many people try to make so many comparisons with this movie and real life. Just enjoy it.

I don't mind the message behind the film, I just wish Cameron would have eased off a bit and not have crammed it down our throats. I got the point... Stop being so damned heavy-handed with it, James. I prefer movies with some room for audience interpretation and Avatar didn't have a lick of it. It was stunningly one-sided and was completely obnoxious about it. That was my problem, not the actual message.

The acting was solid

You know, not enough people mention this... While not extraordinary, the acting was acceptable.

Which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for most other CG characters and in a movie chock full of digital creations, Avatar would have failed miserably if the breathtaking visuals were offset by unbelievable acting.

your in Japan right?

did you get to see the 3D FF13 Trailer in the imax, if so how was it?

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Sounds like the story is extremely clichéd then?!
(if it's like rocketpig said, 'down your throat, tribal guys &nature = good, militia corp & tech =evil...)

I'm about to puke. But I still have to see it cos of the incredible visuals. Ill watch it with Montana's mindset, just lax and enjoy. I've gotten better at doing that in recent years, I can enjoy lots of clichéd and generic movies nowadays.

I just saw Avatar its pretty awesome, but the whole time I kept thinking that I've heard the story before, check out this essay
