I don't think that it was cliché, plot points like "Gaia's vengeance", "the chief's daughter", or "unobtanium", are tropes, not clichés. A story is first and foremost supposed to be familiar and meaningful, not innovative. When there are innovative movies, no one likes them because they are too foreign, so they are soon forgotten as niche films, but when there are movies that embrace lots of these ancient formulas, the audience loves them, just a few over-analyzing nerdsnobs are complaining.
