One Piece
I can't wait for the crew reunion

You haven't heard? About a week ago, all the big publishers banded together to fight online mangaviewers. MangaToshokan, OneManga, and Mangafox specifically are all targetted, and MangaToshokan just responded first. They just removed about 80-85% of their library with a clear message that they won't be trying to get it back. Here's a quote: A spokesperson said that “we are left with no other alternative but to take aggressive action. It is our sincere hope that offending sites will take it upon themselves to immediately cease their activities. Where this is not the case, however, we will seek injunctive relief and statutory damages.” The group is also aggressively reporting violations to the “federal authorities, including the anti-piracy units of the Justice Department, local law enforcement agencies and FBI.” http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/digital/copyright/article/43437-japanese-u-s-manga-publishers-unite-to-fight-scanlations.html |
WTF that sounds pretty serious. I am sure though that I will always be able to read my manga, there will be websites that just ignore it all. It might get a little harder though. I hate this kinda crap, how am I supposed to buy them anyway being in the Netherlands and all. Manga is very hard to come by here and the series that you can buy are behind by at least a couple of years, that is just not viable in this internet era.
Well, I have a feeling that this time around, the sites that try to ignore it will get hit hard. Heck, even a couple of scanlators have given up over this already, and it's only been a week. This isn't the usual "some random publisher requesting their manga be taken down".
They don't care that you're in the Netherlands, they only care about their paycheck.

I have a hard time believing that even the scanlators are getting scared off. They're likely impossible to trace, and their work can easily be hidden in IRC's. The main sites, sure, because they're businesses and they're sedentary, but the scanlators can just hide out and keep working. I mean, it's not especially hard work, between a fluency in Japanese and English and some proficient photo-editing. More will rise to fill the gap.
It's a struggle the publishers can't win. And when they get hit with the same kind of lawyer fees that the RIAA is trying to sustain, they'll back off.

The first target was a relatively "small" shoujo scanlation team.
One at a time. They can definitely target the sites quite easily, and most scanlators have sites these days. They can eventually go back to IRC but that would kill most of the downloads since most people don't know anything about IRC, and then the publishers won that part of the battle. But yes, they'll lose the war for sure.
As I much as I hate to admit it, scanlators and sites like Onemanga, Mangafox...etc. are hurting the manga industry in a way. Don't get me wrong, I'm really grateful to them for providing me and a lot people an opprotunity to read manga but let's think about the mangakas and publishers position. they are definetly losing a lot of money because of free Scanlations and free online reading sites.

I can sympathize with that, but what about non-mainstream mangas that have no chance of coming over the shores.
I will try my best to buy mangas definately especially come Berserk or Monster.

You have a good point there, there are lots of series I enjoy reading that are nearly impossible to find.

All I know Dragon Quest No Daikboken will have no chance of coming over here, let alone being picked up by Viz

Also its the case of waiting weeks, months, or years (if you're in a bad country) to get the story. If the scanlators can do it that quick, why can't the publishers themselves do it? Same goes with fan-subbing, really. If you're not willing to do what's possible, someone's going to get it done, and whining, bitching, and suing about it is the lazy way out.
I'd be willing to pay a small monthly fee to be able to watch anime that was fan-subbed as quickly and effeciently as it already is, and i would imagine it's the same for many people with manga. It's as much a matter of waiting as anything.
