I get the gist of your post. I think it is possible mainly because I see Nintendo replacing the Wii with a new HD compatable one which unless they manage to make everyone believe it is the same Wii will mean that Sony or Microsoft have the opportunity win out on lifetime sales. I believe Microsoft will overhaul the Wii total sales first in this scenario primarily based on cost and the reinvented 360 (Natal).

Of course on the flip side Nintendo do not release another console (or do it a lot later in the cycle) and it sales slowly slide below the HD twins and Sony's Wand is actually the Gimmick of the year and Natal gets delayed or is flawed. One could go on and on but then this is the joy of predictions especially the more risky ones.
