I can agree with what he's saying. The hardcore go looking for games themselves and hype them way ahead of time, so you don't really need all that much marketing. All you need to do is announce a game and it will sell. For the casual, they buy what they hear about whether it be commercials or through word of mouth, etc. They don't go looking for games themselves, so you actually have to put more effort into selling your game. The wii was so successful because it was just everywhere, from oprah to ellen and loads of word of mouth. I wonder if Natal will be as successful. Only time will tell.

considering like 99% of games on the 360 are hardcore what looking do they need to do?

hype alone does not sell the game Wii is a proof of that. The hype is only internet people. The normal shopper which accounts for a big percentage who goes to a 360 section sees only hardcore games and  is almost guranteed to buy a hardcore game.

The normal shopper goes to a Wii section and sees well casual shit and they are guranteed to buy casual shit.

You think a big percentage of "normal" shoppers are going to the 360 section? Uh uh, I don't think so. The majority of "normal" shoppers will go to the wii section. "Hardcore gamers"= Internet people. You said it yourself, 99% of 360 is hardcore.

I meant that hardcore players go on the internet looking for the games they want.

They do.  Why do you think sites like IGN, Gamespot and etc. are catering to them now.

Exactly my point.

I agree to an extent. Core games pretty much sell themselves, but Microsoft is fooling themselves it they think anyone considers Natal a hardcore platform. Natal is basically a Wii add-on for the 360 and most 360 players interested in that kind of stuff already have a Wii. Most hardcore gamers will simply ask "what is the point of messing up my gaming trying to incorporate a new gimmick when a controller offers me far better, and not to mention more precise, control?" Microsoft is going to have a hell of a time trying to sell Natal. Wii is THE casual console, built from the ground up to appeal to that crowd. Microsoft will have to fight tooth and nail against the Wii to market their add-on to people who want a simple straight forward console for their casual games. You would be hard pressed to find a single person who hasn't heard of the wii, even if they aren't interested in gaming.

well Duh, M$ has to pull in casual gamers while the HC gamers are always on the look out for the next big thing.

Microsoft: Hardcore games easiest to sell

LOL, it is not hardcore, it is shooter that are easiest to sell !!!

you have already forgotten all the low performance JRPG or even the average FM3 (sales perspective)

Yeah and hardcore games are the best quality.

Like Rogue Warrior.

like uncharted 2.

I suspect for MS that's true. Their challenge with Natal is they are out of their safe spot. MS has done a good job of taking a very PC centric culture around FPS, online, community and stat tracking and moving it to a console as well as adding strong, traditional titles.

Now though, they are trying to get an audience that previously only Nintendo and Sony have shown any ability to sell to in a big way, and that is no mean feat. Natal is a good tool, but just having Natal won't get them anywhere without the right games, marketing, PR and approach.

When Natal hits, when the Wand hits, it's going to get interesting, that's for sure.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Microsoft and Sony are both focally aimed at the hardcore while the Wii tries to work for the hardcore but just doesnt cut it. There are vastly greater hardcore titles on the HD Twins and their casual offering is horrible compared to the Wii.

Omg casual games don't sell, Wii is d00med!!1

Seriously, I think Wii Sports, Wii Play, Sports Resort, Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus and a few others would beg to differ. There's a difference between casual games and casual shovelware.

Sony has been in the same boat with Microsoft for two generations. If casuals bought casual titles on the PS2 they were really taking what they could get with a cheaper system. I got more social activity out of the Gamecube with friends than I did the PS2 unless we were playing fighters, racers or sports. The Original Xbox gave us multiplayer shooters, racers and more. I do agree though, when Natal and the Wand hit it's going to get interesting. I just hate that Sony had to make another product that was just too close to Nintendo. Aside from that it has more promise than the Wii mote for the things you can do with it and over it will most likely be a cheaper peripheral compared to Natal.
