My point isn't that the PS3 is the looser this gen, it clearly IS sales wise, but my point is that PLAYSTATION 3 games undersell. There is no reason why a game like UNCHARTED 2 should be struggeling to sell in the U.S, when there was a HUGE marketing campaign for it, and every single gaming site gave it astonishingly high reviews *higher than MWF2*

You dont get the world yet do you.

1 - you are comparing a FPS to a TPS, FPS of same quality can eaily do double sales.  Halo COD best pf FPS compared to TPS best like Gears Uncharted2.

2 - Based on quality God of War should have done +10m but it did 1/3rd.  Some genres have lower limits.

3 - UC2 struggling, accoring to you.  Any one sane can see how much better its selling then the first one.  It had the 4th best opening of any PS3 games.

4 - Sony never placed much importance on huge opening sales, Sony games tend to be long term sellers.

How old are you ?

The problem for Sony is that for the longest time Sony never had to focus too much on first party titles except maybe Gran Turismo. Playstation was best known for its exclusive third party libraries on the first two previous generations. Microsoft never had that luxury and Nintendo was abandoned by publishers since the SNES days until now.

However for this generation third party publishers are all going multi-platform which forced Sony to focus much heavier on its first party line-up. What Sony didn't realize was that Microsoft and Nintendo had a much larger brand recognition with their first party titles than Sony did other than Gran Turismo.

It will take a while before Sony's franchises can actually take root and become iconic household names like Halo and Mario.

Your last paragraph is irrelevant, XBOX had very little BIG selling ip, much less than the Playstation 2.. Madden, Halo, and maybe Call of duty were the big selling ip on the original XBOX.

Now going back to your GEARS OF WAR statement, an amazing ip, the true beginning of "current gen" gaming on XBOX 360. Uncharted a game that was also a new ip, and was considered the best looking game of the generation for quite sometime, sold what? 600K in the U.S? How much did Gears sell? 2,3,4 million? U.S alone?

Take a look at this though:

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was missing two crucial features present in Gears of War: co-op & multiplayer. Those helped Gears become the phenomenon it is tioday. Tel me, would Gears have done those #s without it? And despite not having those, Uncharted 1 is about to hit 3mill, not bad for a new IP.

As for Uncharted 2, it's selling MUCH better than it's predecessor, at least as of now. I mean, marketing also plays a BIG role, and Sony has been the loser there this gen for sure. You have to look at all sides of the spectrum.

I cannot say whether it would have or if it wouldn't have done those numbers. Also, yes 3 million is a good number, but I feel like if I say anything else it will turn into a mess.. so lets just end it at that

@Hus

Although that may be true for some games (#4), there are ip that sony have made that are just breathtaking and deserve more than what they hae sold. When nintendo just releases a compliation of mini games and ends up selling millions of more games than sony. It really makes me mad to see that happen.

MS 1st party titles have bigger brand recoginiton then Sony lmao.

Halo is only that iconic in NA, in Europe its just another game while its non existant in Asia.

Thes a big big world where ms 1st party titles mean nothing.

Metroid deserved much bigger sales but it did what it did and thats just how it is.

In Music movies tv shows, plenty are great yet fail to achive mainstream success.  Look at all the crap on tv yet great show like Firefly or Kings don't even get a full season.

Good first post and I agree with you completely.

Now I'm not saying Sony should stop making so many games in favor of fewer games that will sell more or anything. I love the wide variety of games from platformers (LBP, R&C) to shooters (KZ2, RFOM) to driving games (GT5, Motorstorm).

Meh. I disagree. Looking at sonys list i see 7 new IP's this gen in the top 10 with their sequals and games like Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Uncharted, LBP are some of my favorite games this gen and are all new IP's. That to me is impressive.

Its not all about posting alist of statistics like online co-op, online multiplayer, locol co-op, resolution....it doesnt matter to me as a gamer. Not every game needs the same lists of content to be good if the experience is there.

They pumping out some great new IP's which is the most important variable when determining a 1st party success, imo.

I really cannot understand the sales of the PS3 games. It seems like every time they put a game out that looks like a must buy, the game doesn't sell that much. For example, even the great FF XIII, which is I think is the most anticipated game for the PS3 in Japan might have a first week sales less than the six previous FF title ( FF VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII) in Japan.

Great first post (as many others have said).

I agree with you completely, pretty much. I think Sony should be focusing on focusing on adding multiplayer to more and more games. I don't want to see just FPS games which sell well, I'd love to see a massive variety of games with multiplayer to sell well. I'm interested to see how GT5 will do, being the first full GT game with online and the first full GT game of this generation. I also think that games like Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 could definitely feature a co-op mode (Uncharted 2 is still my GOTY and one of my favourites of all time as is though), while titles like PixelJunk Monsters (I know it's PSN game, but it's amazing and an example I could think of) really, really, really should have multiplayer. It already has local multiplayer, so why not online?
