Forums - Sales - First day sales in Japan (11/1)

Well like I said in my earlier post, its a disappointing number but i will wait until the weekly numbers are released before I make my final judgment. Shams made an excellent point about the first day of release being Thursday. If I am not mistaken, aren't the bulk of Japaneses software purchases made on Sunday?

I'm sorry, but what Shams is saying is nonsense. Every release in Japan is on a "Thursday" and we've seen in the past that first day sales mostly form about 70% of total sales. If this will be the case then Mario Galaxy won't sell more than 200.000-250.000. May I remind everyone Minna no Golf 5 sold 150.000 on day 1, 20.000 "more" than Mario Galaxy??

I just think it will do the majority of its week#1 sales over the weekend. Like it or not, kids are the majority market for the game. And many parents will force the kids to wait until the weekend for a game like this.

...

And to put things into perspective - its still on target to outsell the *best* selling PS3 game (in Japan, lifetime) - within its first week on the market.

I agree that the day#1 sales is surprisingly low - but I just can't see this game being ignored by the Japanese public. Its just too high profile, and too good. We all know how the last Mario game on the DS went.

As I mentioned in the other thread on this:
- Thursday: 130k
- End of weekend: 450k
- End of week: 600k

(or something like that)

nice prediction but its never worked out like that for any other games. The first day sales are stupidly lo. I dont see first week sales going past 400k. Japan for some reason isn't buying games like they should. Its rather sad. Hopefully your prediction is right Shams but I'm not crossing my fingers on this anymore as Japan is getting stupid.

@kamil - I disagree on that point. While I don't think that these sales are near as good as expected for SMG, the pokemon dungeon game for the DS sold about 150% more than it's initial sales during the subsequent week, which leaves Galaxy at about 300k for the first week.

You're right about Pokemon Dungeon numbers. I don't know why its week numbers were as much higher than first day but it's not a common situation. And I'm not sure if DS is the best example - after all it has 20 million userbase while Wii lest than 4 million.

And even if MG would end with 300k - it's still much less than most people expected.

I wouldn't bring out the iron lung for mario yet, he will survive. I am a little disapointed though. I asked a clerk at Walmart if they were going to have a lauch event for SMG the other day. "Probably not, it's not like it's Halo 3." I was shocked to here him say that. I told myself he would change his mind as launch got closer. Now I fear Mario won't get his party after all. I will end up picking up my reserved copy day one with little fanfare. I won't enjoy it any less.

It's a kids game.  Most parents don't want to go to Toys R Us or Gamestop in the middle of the weak and make the 8-15 year olds wait until atleast friday after school.  Also they'd rather their kids get a "must play all the time" game on the weekend, so the intense gaming that happens in the first couple days doesn't effect their school work as much.

It's even more a kids game then the main Pokemon series.  Mario Galaxy while it sells to kids isn't that much of a kids game however.

Thanks for the information Onna76! That seems to be correct, not to doubt you but I just checked a bunch of random games and they were indeed released on Thursdays systematically. So that puts these news in a new light, if the 130k number is correct.

130k is just shocking.

Of course you are right Onna that all games are released on Thursdays in Japan, but shams is also right. Remember when Mario Party and Everybody's Golf released on the same day? They were almost equaly on day one, but Party did far better over the weekend making it win the week easily. There are some games that have way better multipliers over the weekend then others, and especially the Nintendo games belong into this category.

That being said, I'm still disappointed by those sales. I think it will sell its 10 million worldwide in the end anyway, but I hoped for better starting numbers.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

Wii Fit will pull in much bigger numbers. I was not expecting this game to drop a bomb. The Wii is a different demographic, and probably mostly the previously gamecube owners got this game - the hardcore Nintendo fans.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Once again, Japanese market is becoming irrelevant.
