The manual never says it's his sister. It's left almost entirely ambiguous.

Oh.........so is it his sister or not? You now have me confused

No one knows. It's supposed to be ambiguous.

And still probably the best ending for a game from the last generation, except for maybe Ico.

I should mention Wind Waker, too. My wife cries like a baby at the "It will be YOUR land"

I don't think the actual relationship between the wanderer and the girl matters, all you need to know is that he'll do anything to save her, that's the meaningful part. The fact that he succeeded through self sacrifice and turning himself into something evil is what makes it a great ending.

MGS3 is the saddest ending for me. Growing up in a military family it was a beautiful story of patriotism that really moved me.

...

I would go for Crisis Core too

FFVII:CC definately gets my vote. That was a very well executed ending, enough so that I had to pause my PSP and walk away when I realized what was happening.

It wasn't really that "sad", but the ending of the original Fallout had me pissed for days.

They kicked me out after I saved their asses! BASTARDS!

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

To me, no game has conveyed a more sad ending than Lufia 2, even though some games like MGS3 and FFX came close to it ;)

Can't believe no one has said it yet...

By far the saddest ending in any video game ever was in Mother 3

*spoiler*
Lucas fighting the masked man who was his brother Claus being controlled by the enemy... it just left me in tears...

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

Oh, right.

Yeah.

Mother 3 pretty easily takes this crown, but that game was tragic the whole way through

FFX to me, was the saddest, yet good ending i'd seen in a game

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...
