Forums - Sales - So...The PS2 Sections Are Vanishing from My Video Game Stores

I was at an FYE the other day, and they have completely disbanded their PS2 section. Even a couple months ago, their were still shelves dedicated to the platform.

The lay out of the store by shelf space is now something like this:

Wii      25%

DS       25%

X360   20%

PS3     20%

PSP     10%

It used to be more like this:

Wii      22%

DS       22%

X360    20%

PS3      20%

PSP       8%

PS2        8%

Even the local Game Stop/ Best Buy/ Walmart have apparently cut back on their PS2 sections. I had been expecting this after Christmas, but it has been happening during the peak shopping season which is not a particularly good sign. I don't think this is a national trend, but it is a little strange to see PS2 being pushed out during the Christmas season.

My local gameshop has more PS2 games than Wii and DS games combined.

Almost as many as the PS3 and 360 sections combined...

I'll get a pic when i next go in... Probably Tuesday.

at my store (I work at a Best Buy) the ps2 section is still just as big as the ps3.
at my store, the breakdown goes

ds= 24%
x360 = 24%
wii = 16%
ps3 = 16%
ps2 = 16%
psp = 4%

The gamestops near me still have huge PS2 sections.  Fry's is about the same size since the PS3/wii launched (oddly enough their biggest sections are PSP/DS).  Target they scaled back a while ago, but it is still around the same size as the other consoles, just has a horrid selection of games.  Best Buy has also reduced the PS2 size, seems to be replaced with PS3 accesories.  And just like target and walmart have terrible selection.

Already been consigned to a bargain bin in the middle in my local store.

Mind you two of the 5 stores in my area that stock video games don't even sell DS games so...

I would think PSP would be the first to go, not the PS2.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

this could be quite the debate.  I think the ps2 might actually sell more software (it does at my store anyway), but the psp might move more hardware.  So it is a give or take, I don't think either system as much life left in it.  I would be very surprised if Sony doesn't announce a psp2 next E3 to come out next holiday, and I assume ps2 will be packing its bags around summer next year.  Either way, I will be surprised if they make it past next holiday season.

Not here in miami.. the PS2 section is still bigger than the PS3 section *how is this not pathetic?*
