@Rocketpig, the original Star Wars movie was a remake of Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. He took a samurai movie about a small team from a rebel alliance rescuing a princess from an evil empire and escorting her to safety... turned the wacky comic relief characters into robots, and lifted the ending reward ceremony straight from Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. Yes, the whole movie was stolen from samurais and Nazis.

I know what the story is based off... but that's only the first movie. To plot out the first trilogy, he studied with Joseph Campbell on how to make modern mythology by "sampling" mythologies from multiple civilizations and taking common themes amongst them and slapping them in the SW universe. I should have clarified my original statement. I think HOW and WHY the Star Wars movies were made are far more interesting than the mixed messages sent by NGE.

Lucas takes from others. He always has and openly admits it. That's not what he's interested in... he's more interested in WHY people like things, which is why I'm fascinated with his earlier films. It's a unique take on movie-making and one that has made him boatloads of money over the years.

I'm boiling your post down to this because you talk too much. :D

I won't argue with people who like NGE. What I don't care for are people who play up its convoluted message as if it's something incredibly deep. If the director doesn't know WTF he/she just created, it's not deep.  It could be personally profound but please, keep it to yourself. Personally, I absolutely worship the movie Magnolia. Most of my friends hate it. The movie is all over the fucking place but I've found a common theme in the movie that really touched me. Do I know if PT Anderson intended that? Dunno, and I don't really care. I adore the characters Anderson created and I think the movie is quite touching because of it.

Oh, and Lynch is bat-shit crazy. I love his work and I love Eraserhead but I'll never argue with anyone who doesn't like his work because, frankly, if you don't care for Lynch's style of film-making, I think that's totally okay. Anyone who has watched his catalog of work and objectively looks at the work has to admit that they're not sure if he's completely insane or a genius. It's totally up in the air. I tend to lean toward the "genius" side when it comes to Lynch because he filmed the greatest lesbian scene ever to hit mainstream film. Shallow, but enough to win me over.

On the other hand, Kubrick is God. There is no doubting his genius.

Okay, so we're on exactly the same page regarding Lynch, Kubrick, Magnolia, and MGS.

I don't even get why some people hate on Magnolia.  I can see why people would hate Lynch and/or Kubrick and/or NGE.  But Magnolia is just a perfect fucking film.  PTA never gets enough credit.  He makes all these movies with tons of amazing characters and stories intertwining, and nobody notices until he makes an Adam Sandler movie, and then suddenly everybody loves him.  And then he makes a movie with only Daniel Day Lewis and a kid and an explosion, and he gets best picture nominations.  It's like people are afraid of movies with more than 3 people in them.

Personally, I think Lynch is one of the world's greatest living directors, and I think he can master any genre if he wanted to.  I think Dune is one of the greatest epic sci-fi fantasy films, Twin Peaks is one of the greatest FBI/surrealist/suspense shows, The Elephant Man is one of the best period piece biopics, Wild at Heart is one of the best road movies, and Blue Velvet is one of the best small town murder mysteries (and much more of course).  But everybody wants to just pay attention to his last 3 movies and think he's totally nuts.  And they're right of course.  And his short films, his comic strip, and his cartoon series aren't going to help his career any.

Kinda reminds me of Kubrick's career.  Total psycho genius who can master any genre, and is nuts to boot.

What I hate and like=

+story is awesome
+EVAs themselves kick ass
+Giant monsters
+Rei
+Misato
+Shinji's dad was pretty cool actually
+Awesome movie afterwards (End of Eva)

-last two eps
-Shinji
-Shinji
-fucking Shinji
-Asuka, or whatever the German girl's name was.

I'm forgetting lots of names Names fixed.

Anyways, I loved the anime, you'll like it too, just keep watching all those brain-blowing weirdness later on.

I guess the awesomeness of the other stuff make up for shinji and Asuka.

I hope that later in PTA's career that Magnolia will finally get its proper due as his magnum opus. Boogie Nights is great, as is Punch Drunk Love but I don't think they're on the same level as Magnolia. Personally, I think TWBB was a step down for him that was only saved by DDL's typically amazing acting job. Still, it's a damned fine movie. But Magnolia has so many characters doing so many things and he didn't cop out on ANY of them. He has over 10 fully fleshed out and believable characters in the flim and manages to keep control of the entire thing... a vastly underrated ability for a director/writer to do in such a film. I remember walking out of the theatre after Magnolia and hearing my GF and good friend bitch about it... I didn't speak for like 5 minutes because I was completely baffled by how they didn't think the film was pure genius.

As for Lynch, I agree that he could probably direct anything if he put his mind to it and laid off the crazy pills for a few years. The guy has mad talent and shows glimpses of it in every film but hasn't strung together anything entirely coherent in years. The In Dreams scene in Blue Velvet is one of my all-time favorite movie scenes.

With brings me to another point... How about the resurrection of Cronenberg over the past 5-7 years? After going completely off the deep end and buying a one-way ticket to Crazyland some time in the 90s, he comes back to direct A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. Hells yes.

I like Shinji and Asuka :/ Shinji tries too hard not to look at the girls, lol. If I were in his shoes I'd do the opposite with the situations he's been in. I'm watching ep 10 right now.

She is like... 14 or something right?

If I wasn't in a public space I would have dug up the lolicon domome pic >.<

Yeah I didn't expect Cronenberg to come back this hard. I'm loving it.

I didn't even realize he directed A History of Violence until after I watched it. That's how far he had dropped off my radar. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

With that said, despite his craziness during the 90s, I still think he's made the best movie named "Crash". I loathed the Oscar-winner from a few years back. A movie about racism should deal with the subject using a scalpel, not a chainsaw. I didn't find most of the characters believable at all while Cronenberg's Crash was just delightfully absurd.

If anyone says it is don't listen to them. It doesn't come close to Geass, nothing does. But you should still watch it, it's really good!
