@Rocketpig, the original Star Wars movie was a remake of Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. He took a samurai movie about a small team from a rebel alliance rescuing a princess from an evil empire and escorting her to safety... turned the wacky comic relief characters into robots, and lifted the ending reward ceremony straight from Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. Yes, the whole movie was stolen from samurais and Nazis.

I know what the story is based off... but that's only the first movie. To plot out the first trilogy, he studied with Joseph Campbell on how to make modern mythology by "sampling" mythologies from multiple civilizations and taking common themes amongst them and slapping them in the SW universe. I should have clarified my original statement. I think HOW and WHY the Star Wars movies were made are far more interesting than the mixed messages sent by NGE.

Lucas takes from others. He always has and openly admits it. That's not what he's interested in... he's more interested in WHY people like things, which is why I'm fascinated with his earlier films. It's a unique take on movie-making and one that has made him boatloads of money over the years.
