360 redesign? Doubt it, considering PS consoles always have a "slim" version, MS wont want to seem like the copy-cat. Not to forget, MS hardware = "eek"

"MS hardware = "eek""

Because the PS2 was a great peice of hardware, and the original Xbox was prone to failure 50% of the time?

Sony and Microsoft have had their mishaps in that area, that doesn't mean Microsoft are bad at making hardware

....

So?

Has the 360 been the most problematic hardware this gen? Yes.

Does the PS2 have anything to do with the thread? No.

Do i think MS want to have another $1Billion payout to fix a bunch more consoles? No.

Yes you're talking about Microsoft being bad at making hardware, when Sony fucked up as well last gen and Microsoft were pretty good on that front.

What's to say Microsoft will let that happen again .. you're acting as if every new xbox console is going to be plauged with problems

Seriously Carl get it together, you're acting like you own the place lately ...

I think Carl just likes to argue; too many cup cakes I guess.......

That said, a redesign for the 360 is a great idea. Microsoft could use this opportunity to steal some of sony's thunder and capitalize on the lower parts and hardware costs. This is their chance to release a console that actually works properly without all the high hardware failure rates due to overheating (red ring, E74 error) and chewing up discs business (even on newer models). I think microsoft will wait until the release of natal to do this though to make the most of the moment.

The one thing that does worry me is a smaller xbox 360 might mean less air circulation and overheating problems all over again....

I think Ms should do it

but Wii? no I don't think so.....nintendo never upgrades home consoles in that way

PS3 sales are astonishing, but I think its mainly attributed to marketing & price

trust me if the phat PS3 was at $299 & marketed in this same way, sales would have still been the same this week

Oh man, i can disagree with you more. I just think that the PS3 was an ugly console, and now its damn sexy. Sry but the slim was a huuuge attribute to the PS3's recent success. I agree though, you cant really redesign the wii, i mean its already small and looks good. A black wii release though could spur the sales a bit like it did in UK

I completely diagree on the looks part:

LOOKS MUCH BETTER THAN

This:

Weirdly i agree with you :P Phat is more beautiful than slim. However from a commercial side if view, the slim is much more practical, and i think Slim+pricecut was a megaton move from Sony. But if the slim wasnt released i dont think sales would have been the same, close but not as huge(especially in japan)

I still don't buy that I'm afraid.

PS3 marketing has improved so much, I still think thats the main reason, EFFECTIVE MARKETING......the same type of marketing that got PS1 to the top.

If we notice during Black Friday week, the DS and PS3 were way up. The Wii did well too but is down, and the 360 is way down. The DS got the DSi and the PS3 got the Slim (the PSP got the Go but that did more harm than anything good because of the way it's designed...DD only = no go.) Now, the PS3's new price helped but there were a lot of upgrades to the Slim too. Same with DSi but that got a higher price than the DSL.

I think Nintendo and MS should do Wii/360 redesigns because of that for more momentum. MS should do a 360 slim (for $200? Reduce the Arcade to $150 or something then.) and then Nintendo should a new Wii model (not a slim, it's already slim enough :P Something like the DSi. Add more features.) and keep it at $200. I believe this would help them regain momentum in 2010, especially Nintendo who have a huge lineup next year like SMG2, Metroid, Zelda (?), Pikmin (?), Retro project (?), etc. with some other games like MH3 which they'll push and some smaller games. Adding more colors too would help with a redesign.

The wii sold over a million consoles last week.  If they sold maybe 700k well maybe

I want a black Wii, it would go MUCH better with my Elite and PS3.

I also don't care for the shiny black PS3, should have bought a slim...oh well.

MS nor Nintendo are hardware companies. Just as MS resolved RROD too... they don't need to mess with the system is what Im saying.

PS3 could have playe th redesign card and no one would hve noticed without the 100 dollar price cut.

Cutting the price should be enough.

i want MS to do it, soon as they do il pick a new one up. im scared of loosing anothing 360 so:
Fix hardware issues
Build in Wi-Fi!

then im on board

Wii - no. 360 - yes. They have so much empty space in there and such bad fan placement! If they just used better fan placement the RROD may have been a myth... With how much they shrunk the power supply with recent Jasper models, I'd say shrink the empty space, put the PSU in there, and rearrange the fans. With Valhalla combined with all that, they could shave off another $50-75 of production costs at least!

360 has had more problems than i can shake a stick at. That's why.

Overheating problems - 360 has a bunch of them, despite having the (huge) power brick external. How would they combat these with an even slimmer 360 with less fans? Not to mention, power brick size? HDD placement? Etc...

Chances are it will be plagued with problems, just like the 360 is now.

And no... Im not. Carry on with that attitude and i will have you removed from my sit- Nevermind...

In the end, you do have to look at what companies are profitable, yes market share is important, but profitability is always first ... and well we know where all companies currently stand on profit.

Redesigning a console is not as easy as it appears, the main goal for sony was to re-image themselves in a positive light. (Or at least that is what I witnessed happen)

The PSU has been shrank quite a bit with Jasper.  If they can get Valhalla out, I think it would be very very easy to redesign.  They can either keep the PSU external which with Valhalla it would only need to be about the size of a laptop AC adapter or smaller, or put it inside some of the empty space at the bottom.  Then all they need to do is make it shorter (when stood vertically) and maybe an inch or so less depth.  Rearrange the fans to actually move air over the heatsinks and they'd have a much cheaper and more reliable machine.
