1. Super Mario
2. Final Fantasy
3. The Legend of Zelda
4. Sonic
5. Diablo
6. Mega Man
7. Tetris
8. Half-Life
9. StarCraft
10. Castlevania

Originally Diablo wasn't even on the list because I considered Diablo II concurrent with the PS2 generation, but the clarification tarheel put (2001 or earlier) lets it in and lets the franchise skyrocket to 5th place, bumping Bomberman off the list.

WarCraft isn't on the list because StarCraft is on it. And yes, IMO StarCraft with Brood War can usurp WC1 and WC2+ToD.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

Because nostalgia ruins my perception of a lot of these franchises, I'm simply going to do mine by how long I can roughly remember spending on the games:

1. Pokemon
2. Crash Bandicoot
3. Spyro
4. Mario
5. Tekken
6. Banjo Kazooie
7. Donkey Kong
8. Driver
9. Croc
10. Bug's Bunny: Lost in Time
11. (if Bug's Bunny doesn't count) Dino Crisis*

*The reason why this is below Bug's Bunny is because I seldom played it myself - I was too scared, but I used to love watching my dad play it.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog
2. Pokemon
3. Super Mario (Main Series)
4. Banjo Kazooie

The systems I own or owned or used are a few, I played a lot of arcade games in the 80's (amongst them Donkey Kong, DK jr and the first Mario games, but they never were my favourites), I seldom played on PSOne, but never liked it, and I owned a 4 unchangeable pong-like games console, an Intellivision, a ZX Spectrum, I have played on PC since 1990 and owned my PC's since 1997, I played on Macs too during the first '90s and I have played some Xwindows games since 1991, so my experience is limited to a few platforms.

My list, biased by my current tastes and fading memories of the oldest ones and based on the few I played and loved in each series is:

  1. Deus Ex
  2. Thief
  3. Fallout
  4. Gothic
  5. AD&D (first of the franchise I played was on Intellivision, but what makes it climb my list is Planescape: Torment)
  6. Grand Prix Legends
  7. Duke Nukem
  8. Myth
  9. Heretic - Hexen
  10. MechWarrior

I wouldn't know where to place Donkey Kong and Mario, after these 10 anyway, but based on which of them I played, DK would come before Mario. And out of my top ten I would rank Half-Life, Unreal, Ultima, MDK and Tomb Raider in this order.
