HotD's a large series?  Afaik the Wii port of 2&3 is the first one to break a million units since HoTD2 back in the 1990s?

Sega's HD games are niche?  Really?  Virtua Fighter 5, Sega Rally Revo, Iron Man, Armored Core 4, Beijing Olympics, Phantasy Star Universe, Full Auto 1-2, Virtua Tennis 3/2009, the Golden Compass, Golden Axe, Condemned 1-2, Universe at War, Stormrise, Yakuza 3/Kenzan, The Club, Viking, Incredible Hulk, Bayonetta, Initial D and 2 Sonic games were all niche now?

Not a large series, exactly. But...ah fine, I'll accept that you're right here.

Now:

Virtua Fighter: Fighting games in general are decreasing in popularity, and VF5 was pretty sucky, compared to the competition.

Sega Rally: It's a rally game.

Iron Man: Movie game.

Armored Core: Armored Core. Yes, it is niche.

Beijing Olympics: Are you serious? That game was utter crap.

Phantasy Star Universe: Stop picking out awful games, or I'll do the same.

Full Auto: See previous.

Virtua Tennis: Tennis games aren't very popular.

Golden Compass: Movie game.

Golden Axe: sucky game.

Condemned: Survival horror, and not RE or SH. Too scary for most.

Universe at War: Shoddy PC port.

Stormrise: Awful game.

Yakuza 3: Sold excellently in Japan, not even released in the West.

The Club: Again... bad.

Viking: Once again...bad.

Hulk: Movie game.

Bayonetta: NOT EVEN OUT YET. Come on! It released in Japan, and did reasonably well.

Initial D: I've never even heard of it.

2 Sonic games: Sonic Unleashed, and a Sonic: The Hedgehog remake?

So yes, bad SEGA games and lazy games based on movie licenses don't sell on HD consoles. Or on Wii, with the exception of Sonic Unleashed.

But when the Wii does get a "large" third party game, while it does sell very well, it doesn't match the sales of the HD versions.

Can you point an exemple?

An exemple of the wii getting a "large" third party game

Cmon, i wanna hear it.

Silent Hill?

Hasn't been released yet - Next week. As SH games go, the Wii version needs to sell roughly 700k to prove the point against you. =)

@avinash

who says they haven't already? It's all subjective and dependent upon peoples taste in games.

I much prefer third party games to nintendo games. whereas you prefer nintendo games to third party games.

to many nintendo fans, there will NEVER be a third party game that beats nintendo, because to them, nintendo games ARE the best.

Silent Hill isn't large, it hasn't been since SH3.  I bet the Shattered Memories doesn't tank as hard as the Homecoming did though (yet another HD bomb).

Well, this is going back to its roots. It seems that a lot of effort and care was put into it. Let's hope it has good marketing. If it does all those things, then WHY will it bomb? What will be the excuse? Because is niche?

Survival Horror is totally niche these days.  I think Shattered Memories Wii might end up being the best selling game in the series this gen, it's getting really good buzz and now it looks like Konami may actually push it as a result... but I'm not expecting big things from this series.  It won't even crack 500k imo.

Resident 4 sold really well. I don't agree it's niche, a lot of people want to play these kind of games but they just grow bored of them because are very similar. Nothing has really changed between them over the years. That's the reason the Wii was created after all, to attract those gamers that were getting bored.

Third parties should focus on creating games to attract lost gamers, not with the "casual" mentality, and probably the sells will come.

Oh man, I can't believe I'm doing this but...

Virtua Fighter: What competition?  You mean Tekken 5 PSN?  VF4 sold over 2 million, VF5 could even crack 500k across HD platforms.  It was a HUGE BOMB.

Sega Rally: Rally games are huge in Europe, they're Codemasters bread and butter.  Sega Rally was big classic IP (way bigger than HotD) and the game got top reviews.  And yet it BOMBED.

Iron Man: Shouldn't movie licenses actually help sales?

Armored Core: Granted, mech games are pretty niche in the west, but the game's still selling way less in Japan.  Like most PS2 to HD transitions.

Beijing Olympics: Utter crap, yeah.  But look at how their utter crap Olympics game sold on Wii/DS.

Phantasy Star Universe: It sells huge on PSP and did okay on PS2.  Tanked on 360.

Virtua Tennis: Tennis games are again, big in Europe.  And Virtua Tennis is again, a way bigger IP than HotD was.

Golden Compass: See Iron Man.

Condemned: RE isn't even Survival Horror anymore,  and Condemned actually outsold SH Homecoming (which BOMBED).

Yakuza 3: It sold okay for a console game in Japan, but it's still down from PS2 numbers.  Kenzan kinda bombed though.  And Y3 will undoubtedly bomb outside Japan if/when it comes.

The Club: 76 on metacritc, not really "bad" per se.  Bizzarre's a pretty well respected dev too.

Hulk: See Iron Man again.

Initial D: It's Japan only, big license, sold great on PS2/PSP, BOMBED on PS3 (I'm sensing a pattern here).

...anyway, all I see are lots of reasonings and excuses.  Why it's almost as if we were talking about "risky" 3rd party Wii games (lol).

Resident Evil 4 isn't really survival horror.  It a straight up action/shooter.  RE5 even moreso.

I think Silent Hill Wii will do well for what it is, but I don't expect it to catapult the series back into it's PS1/early PS2 heydays in terms of popularity or influence.

I do think you're right with targeting "lapsed gamers" though.  I think Nintendo's actually gone some way towards doing that on Wii with the Virtual Console, and it's made some 3rd parties even take notice with stuff like Capcom's MegaMan 9 or Konami's ReBirth line.

Thats why come next gen I won't be buying a Wii 2, rather just the DS. Atleast at launch anyways.

Nintendo themselves has a lot of great titles but the third party offerings don't come close to what the PS3 or 360 has to offer, let alone the PC. It's a matter of opinion but I do think metacritic and gamerankings speak for themselves. That's not to say the PS3 or 360 doesn't have It's fair share of crap but I find myself buying less and less Wii games every year. If it wasn't for the great amount of light gun/rail shooters and No More Heroes I wouldn't have bought a non-first party Wii title in the last two years.

It's just that simple.

Why are you assuming the second Wii would be the same thing? Nintendo just as likely will release it when they get third party support.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I think the majority agree with me that third parties have yet to come close to Nintendo, judging by view of third parties on these forums and sales of Wii games

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I don't believe I'm replying, as well. But:

Virtua Fighter: Well yes, there was Tekken PSN, and also Dead or Alive, and really VF5 didn't have much effort put into it. It wouldn't have sold any better on Wii.

Iron Man: No, movie licenses don't help sales, because movie games tend to be bad. This is no exception.

Armored Core: The Japanese market isn't as large as before, for any console, especially the HDs. All games sell worse in Japan now, except portable games and a few others.

Beijing Olympics: That utter crap game on Wii/DS had Mario and Sonic in it.

Phantasy Star Universe: Completely different game on 360. Also, Phantasy Star is big in Japan, and the 360 isn't.

Yakuza 3: Actually, this massively outsold Yakuza 2 (first week). Yakuza: Kenzan was a spinoff.

The Club: Well, it's not really very well-known.

Initial D: PS2: 22 million userbase. PSP: 12 million userbase. PS3: 4 million userbase. And you're surprised. HD games don't sell very well in Japan, Wii games sell better. I'll admit that.
