Oh man, I can't believe I'm doing this but... Virtua Fighter: What competition? You mean Tekken 5 PSN? VF4 sold over 2 million, VF5 could even crack 500k across HD platforms. It was a HUGE BOMB. Sega Rally: Rally games are huge in Europe, they're Codemasters bread and butter. Sega Rally was big classic IP (way bigger than HotD) and the game got top reviews. And yet it BOMBED. Iron Man: Shouldn't movie licenses actually help sales? Armored Core: Granted, mech games are pretty niche in the west, but the game's still selling way less in Japan. Like most PS2 to HD transitions. Beijing Olympics: Utter crap, yeah. But look at how their utter crap Olympics game sold on Wii/DS. Phantasy Star Universe: It sells huge on PSP and did okay on PS2. Tanked on 360. Virtua Tennis: Tennis games are again, big in Europe. And Virtua Tennis is again, a way bigger IP than HotD was. Golden Compass: See Iron Man. Condemned: RE isn't even Survival Horror anymore, and Condemned actually outsold SH Homecoming (which BOMBED). Yakuza 3: It sold okay for a console game in Japan, but it's still down from PS2 numbers. Kenzan kinda bombed though. And Y3 will undoubtedly bomb outside Japan if/when it comes. The Club: 76 on metacritc, not really "bad" per se. Bizzarre's a pretty well respected dev too. Hulk: See Iron Man again. Initial D: It's Japan only, big license, sold great on PS2/PSP, BOMBED on PS3 (I'm sensing a pattern here).
...anyway, all I see are lots of reasonings and excuses. Why it's almost as if we were talking about "risky" 3rd party Wii games (lol). |
I don't believe I'm replying, as well. But:
Virtua Fighter: Well yes, there was Tekken PSN, and also Dead or Alive, and really VF5 didn't have much effort put into it. It wouldn't have sold any better on Wii.
Iron Man: No, movie licenses don't help sales, because movie games tend to be bad. This is no exception.
Armored Core: The Japanese market isn't as large as before, for any console, especially the HDs. All games sell worse in Japan now, except portable games and a few others.
Beijing Olympics: That utter crap game on Wii/DS had Mario and Sonic in it.
Phantasy Star Universe: Completely different game on 360. Also, Phantasy Star is big in Japan, and the 360 isn't.
Yakuza 3: Actually, this massively outsold Yakuza 2 (first week). Yakuza: Kenzan was a spinoff.
The Club: Well, it's not really very well-known.
Initial D: PS2: 22 million userbase. PSP: 12 million userbase. PS3: 4 million userbase. And you're surprised. HD games don't sell very well in Japan, Wii games sell better. I'll admit that.
