You can play as Wario in Mario 64 DS. Does a Mario story really have to make sense?

Yeah puzzles.
There are tons of puzzles in every mario game. They just aren't specifically presented as puzzles. I'd say maybe, "brainteasers", or something to that extent.
Basically, something like needing to bounce off a string of baddies to reach a certain area, or needing to fly under a floor to get to a secret door.

I suppose not. But I have a better idea than both using the Toads or Wario/Waluigi. Make the helpers from Paper Mario Series playable and let them keep all of their unique abilities to spice things up a bit. Of course port the characters to 2.5D. That would add a large collection of characters to use. Goombario with a penguin suit...

@Specialops: Umm, i didn't get the 2,5D stuff. NSMB Wii is done with 3D graphics.

@Edouble: It doesn't need to make sense. After all, the Super Mario story doesn't make any sense to begin with. A plumber from Brooklyn ends up to a mushroom kingdom that has walking mushrooms as habitants and is ruled by a human princess. The mushroom kingdom is invaded by a giant tortoise and his minions, that have kidnapped the princess.

Problem with Wario and Yoshi is that Wario is a bad guy, so it doesn't feel right to play with it, and Yoshi is a power-up, so playing with it is rather retarded.

They call it 2.5D (he even does in this review video). Its 3D graphics used in a 2D way.

How? With friend-code system the way it is?

No, i'm not being sarcastic, I actually can't wait for online, Unless Nintendo wants to fly my friends to play with me offline

Donkey Kong would have been a cool player character but the game ultimately doesn't work since he has different geometry than Mario and Luigi (and what part of him is considered a hit for stopmping on an enemy for example). Wario and Waluigi are evil, they don't belong as heros even if you explained it somehow, I wouldn't want to be them. I think it would have been awesome with a slightly different story somehow and having Peach and Daisy as player characters so girls can play as them.
