@Specialops: Umm, i didn't get the 2,5D stuff. NSMB Wii is done with 3D graphics.
@Edouble: It doesn't need to make sense. After all, the Super Mario story doesn't make any sense to begin with. A plumber from Brooklyn ends up to a mushroom kingdom that has walking mushrooms as habitants and is ruled by a human princess. The mushroom kingdom is invaded by a giant tortoise and his minions, that have kidnapped the princess.
Problem with Wario and Yoshi is that Wario is a bad guy, so it doesn't feel right to play with it, and Yoshi is a power-up, so playing with it is rather retarded.
