If you compare both companies gaming divisions, Sony and MS aren't that much big than Nintendo. Also, in total revenue (gaming division), Nintendo has always turned profit, which makes then a massive competitive enterprise, so it's kind of unfair to call Nintendo small. The little chain of stores which houses, at best, 100 employees is small, Nintendo is far, far from being small.
Plus, don't forget, Nintendo is also the oldest company in the gaming and general toys business, so their the ones with the biggest experience in the market.
