Forums - Nintendo - ( PCWorld ) Why The Wii Needs an HD Visual Upgrade

Three years of outselling the competition, and people still refuse to admit Wii is a success and a good portion of people do not care about HD.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Nov 2006 to 07th Nov 2009:

Console Wii PS3 X360

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Wii fit is a success yet it still not much of a game. Wii is a huge success for mini-games. Compared to a lot of Wii shovelware sales a game like Valkyria Chronicles looks like a failure.

^If that were true, then why do so many minigame collections fail?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I just took a look at Wii 5 games that in last week top 10 and the only one that isn't mini-games is Mario Kart Wii.

Wow, I said all non HD games in history were crap, did I? Where? I happen to think that the best games ever made are mostly all from the early 90's PC era. I'm simply stating that HD is part of the natural development in visual and audiovisual processing. So maybe you don't hate HD but only the idea of games in HD, but why? Are HD movies and HDTV signals also redundant? Of course, many claim that its already "good enough" but where would we be in terms of technology if people sat on their asses and said that all the time instead of pushing forward?
I don't see the offensive article filled with lies that others do, I see a guy saying that HD is the future (and present) and part of a natural development cycle, like color television or broadband internet.
Its just as natural and you can't build and release a console that doesn't take this into consideration and expect no one to point that out.
I know the guy who wrote that piece is usually a troll but he's right about Reggie needing to stop whining, he can't go around pointing fingers at everyone save for his own employer, its not a great big conspiracy, its technology and business (cue Avinash or some others saying "then how come no one makes money on HD consoles...").

I wasn't going to say that, I was going to say, that if its about business, then isn't it cheaper and easier to put out games with last gen visuals on the Wii?  I mean look at RE4 Wii edition, sold well over a million I believe, and yet its not HD, in fact it was a port with some improvements, That's money in the bank for Capcom, why create the flop that was RE5, on the HD consoles, when they could have made the same game better and cheaper on the Wii?  If you say Wii must have HD, then you must have hated earlier gen games, and if you liked them, then waht is stopping companies from making games like that on the Wii?  If its business, then it should be easy, Wii is cheaper to develop for, and you can probably use assets from earlier gen games to make a Wii game, saving time and money.  Companies do lose a lot of money on the PS3 and 360, for what, so they can make games with shiny graphics?  That's not smart business.

You're a broken record Avinash, and calling Resident Evil 5 a flop makes you look silly, it has sold nearly 5 million on PS360 so far with a small installed base. In comparison (hard to compare directly though), The Conduit on the Wii has sold a measly 300k on by far the biggest installed based (yes, its a new IP but you can hardly call 300k impressive by any measure) and you call RE 5 with 5 million sold a flop? Come on. And did you read the post you quoted? I never said I couldn't enjoy games that aren't HD, like I stated above, the best games ever made (imo) are from the early 90's PC golden era but technology moves forward and I can accept that. HD is a technological advancement as is proper motion controls, in that regard perhaps all three consoles are lacking. Besides; I'm glad I don't play my games in 640X480 with no filters or effects any more, its only natural to move forwards. Why not have both HD and motion controls? Cars advance all the time from the T-ford, making them safer, more sturdy and with better handling and comfort, that doesn't mean we shouldn't also refine the engines and make them more efficent as well. And when you can't see anything other than "games with shiny graphics" as if that's all there is to offer on the HD consoles I don't see much reason to take you and your posts very seriously to be honest.

A flop compared to RE4, which sold over 6 million, and was cheaper to make, hence more profits.

Yeah, I can understand tech moving forward, but when the market doesn't want to move forward at the same pace, as shown by the Wii sales, then the companies need to realize that and move as the market wants, if the Market isn't ready for a new type of engine, you have to slow down and stick to the old kind or make something more in between.

Maybe because they are good games even while being mini-games, gasp, what a concept, make good games, and they will sell, OMG, I wonder if I should let the big game companies know this great secret, since its clear most haven't learned it

Wii fit is a success yet it still not much of a game. Wii is a huge success for mini-games. Compared to a lot of Wii shovelware sales a game like Valkyria

Some guys on the internet claim that the Wii 'needs' a HD visual upgrade yet every week (at the moment) half a million people disagree with that statement to the tune of >$250 USD.

As for the mini-games on the Wii you don't have to like them but Wii Sports Resort is still a really good game and there is obviously a market for games like this and they are making Nintendo a bunch of money.  For people to insist that the Wii needs to follow the HD route, which has lost Sony and MS alot of money, rather than stick with what it is working for them, is silly.

Furthermore, if the Wii HD did eventuate how is that going to change the equation? Most of the people who complain about Wii's lack of HD are self proclaimed hardcore gamers. Are all the hardcore gamers who have dissed the Wii for the last three years all of a sudden turn around and buy the Wii HD because now it also plays the SAME GAMES that they can already get on the systems they already own?  I sincerely doubt there are lots of hardcore gamers of last generation sitting around still waiting and hoping Nintendo is going to announce Wii HD before they finally make the plunge into this gen.  Add to this even if a Wii HD came out in the next 6 months, it's going to be 1-2 years before we see games taking advantage of the new power. Plenty of people are still buying the WII as is, HD is not going to bring alot of other consumers and it's going to cost Nintendo money.  Why should they do it and why is it needed?

I would love to see what Mario Galaxy or Zelda or Metroid could look like in HD but if you tell me you won't play those games until they are in HD, you're not hardcore at all, you're shallow. I say this as someone who dropped 6K on a HDTV back in 2002 when almost no one even knew what they were.  I love me a shiny picture as much as the next guy but I can see almost no sense in this argument.

Games like Assassin's Creed 2 or Modern Warfare 2 almost depend on higher-definition visuals. When you're rendering complex 3D environments like gutted war zones in Iraq or full-fledged Italian Renaissance cities and asking players to keep track of multiple objects in those environments, visual clarity--in particular, clarity at great distances--becomes advantageous, verging on paramount. Assassin's Creed 2 doesn't render complex landscapes to drain performance budgets or high-five videophiles.

I call bullshit.  Here is the proof: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/07/half-of-next-gen-console-owners-are-playing-on-standard-def-tvs/
Half Of Next-Gen Console Owners Are Playing On Standard-Def TVs

It’s easy for those of us with HDTVs to forget that not everyone has them yet. And Epic’s Mark Rein’s stat that over half of Gears of War 2 players played it on an SDTV really brings that home.

If you’re wondering why Microsoft and Sony are going to drag this current generation of consoles out for as long as possible, look no further than this:

Over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs…My point is, of the systems that are out there now, the majority of them aren’t plugged into HDTVs. So there’s no way we’re ready for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever.

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

I read on a few games forums where gamers complain about trying to see something on SD TV with a HD console game. Also just the fact you are using a SDTV doesn't mean the extra information isn't there , just can't be displayed all at one time. That why he wrote games like AC2 and MW 2 almost depends on HD and these are not by far the only ones.

Someone playing on a HD game on a SDTV is at some disadvantage just as someone who can't half see. As far as all those Wii mini-games they don't requir HD as most of them doesn't look all that hot on SDTV.
