Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Am I crazy, or isn't this a huge deal?

Buried at the bottom of a Kotaku article that was primariyl about something else, in a tiny little sentence, I saw this:

"[Iwata] added that the will begin selling the Wii in China next year and unveiled a new gift-giving feature for the Wii."

Yes! The new gift giving feature. Let's talk about that forever. Also, the Wii is entering China.

Now, I'm certainly not an expert economist, but with even provincial understanding of the world economy, it seems like a pretty massive deal that the Wii will be launching in China. Am I... wrong? Do I have this wrong?

I don't like the gift giving feature. Why should I spend my money on VC games, only to give them to a friend?

and yes it is a big deal.

Ugh, I hope this is sarcastic :(

This is about China. China. China. CHINA.

The Wii is entering China. Again, this seems like an extremely important move, but perhaps I'm misinterpreting it. Anyone?

With piracy being so big in China,I´d think practically all profits will be made with hardware sold, not software.

Post your predictions! Which will sell more in China? The Vii or the Wii!?

I think some people need to go to www.dictionary.com and look up the meaning of

"gift".

SO many people on so many forums saying the same thing. Its a gift. It is like any other gift you buy for a person for their birthday wedding etc...

You are totally wrong for two major reasons.

The first is that China is a poor country compared to the EU, Japan, and especially America. The average American is about 6 times wealthier than the average Chinese citizen, so it's unlikely that China has much disposable income to spend on video games. If you're interested, you can check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita .

Second, piracy is a huge problem in China. The government basically only enforces intellectual property rights when it is convenient. That's why you get hilarious knock-offs like the "Vii:" http://www.techybytes.com/the-vii-chinas-answer-to-the-wii/.

That's why nobody currently bothers to try to sell console games in China.

You have a lot of people who can buy the Wii in China but I don't know if they want it and what about the Vii?

I really need to know how much that system will cost.
