Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 price cut coming soon??

elprincipe said: shams said:The DS hasn't had a price cut since it was released. Not true, it went from $149 to $129. Then of course they released a new model with superior features for the same price.
Yup, you are right - very true. But apart from this - no price cuts, right? The DSLite hasn't moved in price (just released in bundles).

Its not about aggression. How do you increase production by 2-3x?? And do it quickly? In short - you can't. Think about all the components and elements required for the console. They need to increase the supply for *every single one* of those - and then find manufacturing/assembly capacity to put it together. 1mill units/month = shitload. It comes to about 30,000/day, or 1,500 every hour (and these factories DO run 24hrs a day!). 1,500 / hr = 25 consoles a minute. Now just stop and think about those numbers... 25 made EVERY minute, consistantly for month, upon month. Wow. Now consider than the DS is currently producing 2-2.5mill / month (or 50-60 units / minute). Double wow. The same applies to the 360, PS3, IPod, etc. Manufacturing capacity these days is incredible. ... Its not even about money. Nintendo has money to burn, and would LOVE to triple capacity - even for a significant outlay (as long as "per unit" cost doesn't increase too much). Im sure they would have LOVED to launch with 5mill units worldwide.

If MS was going to cut the price then they would make the Elite $399, and the premium less. Also, there not going to release a new system and cut the price 6 month later to piss everyone off. Strom: I think what Fishy was referring to the fact that out of the three, Sony loses the most. That's why he states that both MS and Nintendo have that extra margin of profit to cut.
MS is charging $479 for the Elite because its going to be a limited run and have a black system case instead of the usual white. In other words, they know they can get away with charging an additional $80. Its already been confirmed that once the Elite is sold out, the Premium model will get all the Elites features but sell for the usual $399 price. The current premium model, 20GB model, will be sold at the Core models current $299 price. The only thing that is up in the air at the moment is the Core model. MS hasn't decided whether they are going to can it, or sell it at a lower price point.

All Nintendo has to do is make people thing they are doing a price cut.....what they will do is stop bundling it with Wii Sport and charge $200 for it. Then everyone will be saying "Hey look it's only $200, but the smart will say "You have to buy a game though". But if they put Wii Sports on the Milllon seller and drop the price to 20 that would be cool.

If I was Nintendo I would want to be able to sell the Wii, 2 Wiimotes, 2 Nunchucks and Wii Sports for $199.99. I don't know if they can reduce the production costs by that much but if they could the system would fly off of the shelves at that price. Part of the reason for this is it would be a throwback to the NES and SNES days where you could buy a system with two controllers and a game for a reasonable price; it makes a good gift for most families because it is not too expensive and there is not (immediate) need to make additional purchases to put it under the tree.

Right, they haven't gone down since the launch of DS Lite. But really, with the console sold out everywhere over Christmas and still in somewhat short supply in the U.S. and Japan at least (not sure about Europe), do they need to reduce the price? DS is destroying PSP at the current price.

That would be one hell of a deal. But Nintendo has no reason to do that right now, as it already is flying off the shelves. I really don't expect to see Them mess around with the price (asside from possibly the taking out of Wii sports) until next holiday season.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

strange considering the new "elite" hasnt even been announced at this point, yet prices and price cuts have been confirmed based off of this console that hasnt even been announced yet? the interweb works in mysterious ways.

Yes, that I would agree with. They do have more cost, but relatively speaking, they can also cut more costs than the others because the system is more expensive. As I demonstrated has been true in the past. MS already announced a price cut this year.

shams said: Forget about price cuts. None of the 3 companies are interested in dropping their margins - if it happens, MS will lead to put pressure on Sony. Nintendo - Wii price cut = no. As long as its selling out (quickly), Nintendo will not even consider a price cut. It would be stupid to do so. The DS hasn't had a price cut since it was released. Expect more package deals instead (Wii + Wii Sports + other game for $20 more, etc). Sony - Sony have stated they have no plans to drop the price for 15-24 months. I don't think they will wait this long (if sales continue to disappoint). When the Xbox1 launched (here in Oz), the price was way too high (about $150 less than the PS3 at the moment). Within 2 weeks, the price had dropped about $200AU (to a much more competitive level). PSP price drop, and new model out for Xmas. Microsoft - 360 has been out for long enough, and its about time for a cut - for Xmas/Halo. Expect the new model launched, and price cuts to the base (maybe) and the premium model. This may force Sony to follow suit - esp. if MS has plenty of stock available/in the market.
Technically the DS launched at 150 and now costs 130. Also deals are given frequently down to 99 bucks for a DS at many retailers.
