'360 has the best games' says Xbox LIVE boss

Best FPSs and best exclusives prove 360 is 'still at its heart a gaming console'.

The Xbox 360 has the best games and the best first-person shooters, a high-ranking Microsoft executive has claimed.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com to promote the launch of the Sky Player on Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE Europe general manager Jerry Johnson said that the console's exclusive games "prove the point that this is still very much at its heart a gaming console", despite strong moves to broaden the 360's appeal.

He said: "I'll come back and say that Xbox has the best games out there. It's got the best first-person shooter games out there. The exclusives we've had over the past years and what we had going into this holiday prove the point that this is still very much at its heart a gaming console.

"There's nothing we're going to change with that. You will start to see us, though, do things that are broader marketing and start to expose some of the things that are broader than just first-person shooters."

The launch of the Sky Player, which allows 360 owners to stream Sky content, is part of Microsoft's attempt to broaden the Xbox 360's appeal.

According to Johnson, Microsoft hopes the 360 will become known as more than "just a Halo or Gears of War machine".

Johnson denied, however, that Microsoft's focus would move away from the core gaming experience fans love it for.

"Trust me, I think you'll find people operate in different modes," he said. "My wife doesn't like the fact I game sometimes. I'm still going to go game sometimes. There's nothing we're going to change that's going to not focus on those customers more. In fact, not just this year but in the next year, we'll continue to do features that are targeted at that hardcore gamer. At the same time we are going to start to do things that appeal to both the hardcore gamer and the broader user, and continue to do things and start to do more targeted at the broader user specifically."

Johnson's "best games out there" comment comes at a time when the PS3 owners are enjoying the launch of some incredible games, including Naughty Dog's stunner Uncharted 2.

In the FPS category, the PS3's exclusive Killzone 2, released earlier in the year, saw rave reviews, as did Insomniac's Resistance series. The Xbox 360 has, of course, Halo 3 and the recently released Halo 3: ODST.

In regards to his "halo/gears machine", I think people see XBOX as more than just Halo/Gears now....3rd party sales pretty much prove this.

OMG! It appears M$ is affraid of PS3 surge. So many news about self promotion. I think this points towards a PS3 win through the holidays. Are you feeling the same?

The PS3 is selling well but although I dont agree with the way MS announce things I do agree with the thrust of their argument.

The PS3 has a fractured market due to its ability to DO EVERYTHING.

Problem is its not always a desirable feature

For instance of my friends which own PS3 (3 last count) 1 bought it for Movies, the other 2 for games.

To this day the Movie Buff has never played a game on his PS3. Its in a purpose bulit cinema room.

The other 2 have only ever watched one BR movie and that was because it came free with the console. They just play games.

Furthermore, one of the game players is a racing nut who has only purchased 3 games. All racers.

It just seems that there are a number of Ps3's being underused out there and that cannot please SONY.

The XBOX is primarily a games machine. I have one and about 50 game titles last count.

I will one day get a PS3 but as I myself dont really like movies it needs to be games that sell the console to me.

Currently I am interested in 2 games on the system

Uncharted 2
Killzone 2

Everything else appears to be multiplat or not my thing.

For these reasons I would call the 360 as currently the Hardcore HD gaming platform as MS have said.

The PS3 will catch up but it needs more mass appeal Exclusives and I do believe it will get them, but time is not on the PS3's side.

Well the biggest PS3 exclusives that MS still hasnt touched yet is MGS4 & FFvXIII. I really cant think of a bigger exclusive than those 2 that the 360 has that the PS3 doesnt. Til then, im liking PS3's 3rd party exclusives better.

As for 1st/2nd party, its all ones taste, such as i prefers Sony than MS or Nintendo.

Agree that Xbox360 probably has better FPS (its MS they oughta or they're really doing something wrong). As long as they dont port them to PC gives that title of best FPS alot more meaning to the 360.

in other news jack tretton praises the PS3 as having the best variety of the best quality in any console on the market.

while Reggie Fil-Aims says that the Wii have the best and most successful first party out of any console on the market.
