almcchesney said: actually it was nintendo that didnt want to move to cd's and backed out when sony had the ps1 almost developed. sony was ready to go because after developing the sound chip for the snes they had some sort of partnership but nintendo went with phillips instead which sony tried to sue for the breach of contract, yes nintendo broke the contract. then sony tried to bury the project but Norio Ohga let katarugi finish the project when they were starting to decline.
as for the quality seal was there it was nice to know the games didnt suck, im just saying the wii has seen more shovelware than any console ever has which sucks. i have a wii and dust it off every now and then but rarely. |
Nintendo did want to move to CD's and was trying ever since the Famicon days with the disc system. However, within the contract with Sony, Sony claimed 100% rights to every IP that Nintendo put on the CD system (SNES-CD). This is why Nintendo went to phillips for the CD based system but that flopped horribly and they abandonded that before release. Sony then came out with the Playstation, and Nintendo tried to counter with the N64. The N64 was the product of failed atttempts at building a disc based system and they had to put something out the door.
Sony did almost drop the playstation project, but that doesn't counter the fact that Sony was trying to steal Nintendo's hard work.
EDIT: as much as I don't like Wiki, you can check it out on the Playstation page for information about how Sony wanted to steal the IPs.
