Forums - Gaming - Which current-gen console has the best games?

Also, speaking about the downloadable services.

I own more games on PSN over XBLA due to the type of games that are popular on each service. The one problem with VC is that I struggle to choose to spend that dollars for something that is easily obtainable (for free) rather than something that I can not get anywhere else.

As bad as that sounds, it's tough for me to spend $8 on Secret of Mana knowing that I could spend that $8 to something new.

Another note on XBLA, the Indie Games were a fantastic addition. I absolutely love I MAD3 A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB13S 1N 1T! or however you spell it.

Strictly speaking this isn't a discussion about what's the best investment of money, but since you brought that up it's a pretty interesting point.

Does piracy affect your view of the Virtual Console? Would it matter that a large number of XBLA and (maybe?) PSN titles can also be pirated?

See, it's kinda a weird internal battle. I don't pirate things very much at all. Everything in my games collection (all ~475 games) are official/bought/whatever so it's not that I like downloading everything. With VC, it's a decision of $8 on a SNES that I know I could obtain for free if I wanted or put that $8 towards Flower or to 4 more Rock Band 2 songs.

I think it would matter to an extent as well if PSN and XBLA titles were pirateable, etc. I haven't bought a single XBLA game that was released a while ago. The only port I've bought was Triggerheart Excelica which was a Dreamcast game released in 2007. The issue isn't entirely the same because with PS1 Classics you can play on both PS3 and PSP so you know that $6 gives you two copies of the game. That's a pretty good value.

@ maxwell

Actually, I only own one WiiWare game because nothing else has really interested me. I have World of Goo on PC, and a lot of the disinterest stems from lack of knowledge of some of the better titles. I'm kinda skeptical on some of the recommendations because I've been burnt before on some VGC Wii recommendations.

To finish off my part in this thread, I would like to say thank you for making a thread with some actual discussion on this subject, and keeping it as nice and 'clean' as you did. Good environments for discussion also spawn better arguments, and I am glad that I could contribute in a meaningful way.

And then it strikes me. What about yourself?

Ah ha ha ha, that's a good question.

What part do you want to know?

No less than what you wish to know from the rest of us

Why I chose what I did? All right.

I think the primary driving factor in my own purchasing decisions - or playing decisions if you prefer, since this is more about time invested rather than money - is experience. I revel in experience in many ways: refinement of experience and novelty of experience are probably the two biggest. I love new experiences, and if I could I would play every game in the world just for th sake of being able to enrich myself in whatever wya that would enrich me.

That's one of the big reasons why I like the Wii's library (not the Wii, mind, this is about the games on a console rather than the console itself): it is full of new experiences. A lot of people consider the Wii's new games as "novelty" or "gimmicks", but this is not so for me: in these experiences I see the potential for immense refinement and focus, leading to new experiences down the line. Phantom Hourglass in my mind is sort of the realization of the potential of the DS hardware, and I hope that Nintendo will end up doing something equivalent for the Wii with the new Zelda game.

The refinement of experience is also important, though, and while it's true that I get a lot of just flat-out great experiences on the Wii (Super Mario Galaxy is still the most fun I've had in years), it's also the reason I picked up an Xbox 360: I also like the experiences that are offered there. Gears of War is great to me because it offers a very focused and tight experience in a package that allows me to play it with my little brother from hundreds of miles away.

Multiplayer is a big part too, and when it comes to that I can't reasonably think of a more fun time than the rounds of Smash Bros. and Mario Kart that I've spent playing with friends and family.

And yes, I will admit it: the Virtual Console is a very large part of my affinity for the Wii's library. I went years without proper access to an SNES or the ability to buy my own games for my NES and Genesis, nevermind owning a NEOGEO, and the ability to sink my teeth into so many games that I never got to play and which still hold up so well over time... I mean, I never got to play the original Punch-Out!! or Super Mario RPG before I bought a Wii. Hell, I never played the first Legend of Zelda. The Wii has helped me to discover a deep and abiding love for old games, which meeans a lot.

Anything else you'd like to know? Anything you are curious about?

You and I are a lot alike i feel when it comes to games.  It's why I can't wait for this dang borderlands to unencrypt.  I'm deliriously interested to see how random generation effects a FPS when it's on such a huge scale.

You should really try the MLB Power Pros success modes if you get the chance.  The first one can probably be gotten for like 5 bucks.

It's basically old school RPG character building with some baseball and a ton of enjoyable off the wall occurences.  Only downside is they don't really utilize the Wii in any way except a throw away mode.

I can't really think of anything else to ask about right now, I think you have it covered.

And in a way, I agree with you on the Wii (or agreed anyway). Maybe you remember the thread, maybe not, but here is An opinion - I want to want a Wii. (Hmm, maybe I should revive that thread...)

Things have changed since that thread though. I still want to want a Wii, but as I said in my second post in here, I don't have much faith in the Wii getting up to speed with the HD consoles. I think the greatest thing to work against my hopes of the Wii providing enough uniqueness for me to want it, is that both Sony and Microsoft have announced their own motioncontrols. On top of that, there have been few announcements by 3rd parties of games coming to the Wii. Ones that I had also hoped would come anyway, but there hasn't run that much water under the bridge yet.

Ultimately, the Wii is more attractive now then it was back when I made that thread, but not enough.

Well, as you guys may know I love platformers. Love 'em. They're my bread and butter (and boysenberry jelly) when it comes to gaming. I dunno... when I first laid my hands on that Genesis controller something just clicked when I pressed right on the control pad. There's a beautiful thing going on with platformers, and it's very hard to really point to a certain aspect of the game(s) and say "That's why this game is great!". I don't know, a great platformer is something that's pure bliss. It's just good ol' fun.

So... when choosing my platform, I look and see what system has this type of genre, both in quality and quantity (since quality is subjective anyways). Now, I hate to base my choice on just one single genre, since ignoring everything else would be foolish at best... but having great platformers is to me something of extreme importance. I kind of got away from that during the GameCube era... and it was evident that I was losing interest in video games as a result. It was my first video game love, and it'd be a shame to ever lose track of what made me fall in love with video games from the start. So I have to say that I have to go with Wii.

Why Wii? Well, I mean... first of all it's now the main choice of the Blue Blur (in both VC and retail games, but I'm sooo jealous of you XBLA owners with S&K right now! ). With Sonic & the Secret Rings (great game), Sonic Unleashed (playing it now, sunshine stages are amazing) and Sonic & the Black Knight (Really enjoyable game as well. Talk to Mr. Khan, WoW, or myself if you wanna know if this game is "teh crap olol" or not.), this system houses my favorite franchise... both new and old.

And then there's Mario. Man, he just gets platforming. 2D, 3D, both (Super Paper Mario), he just delivers this fun that's out of this world (Galaxy pun) and I'm a better gamer for it. Heck, my favorite game this generation (and 2nd of all time!) goes to SMG. And I can't wait for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I really want to share my joy of platofming with my family and friends, and with multiplayer I can.

Wii also provides new platforming experiences for me, such as the stylish and genre bending de Blob, the classic 2D puzzle-platformer in A Boy in His Blob (wonderful game so far), and other Nintendo mainstays such as Donkey Kong (Jungle Beat) and Wario (Shake It!). There's still more games I need to purchase for now and for the future, such as Klonoa, Rabbids Go Home, NSMBW, Galaxy 2, and Epic Mickey (whew!).

I haven't even gotten to WiiWare yet... and that houses some greats like LostWinds and Mega Man 9. Don't get me started on Virtual Console!

Like I said, ignoring the other genres would be foolish, which is why I haven't. I've purchased games for Wii from all different genres, and I'm a better gamer for it. But in the end, when it comes to my bread, butter, and jelly... Wii delivers in spades. That's why it stands out for me.

Right so, my reasoning for the Wii. As alluded to earlier first party titles play into it in a huge way. I am not a fan of realism in games by any stretch of the imagination. Whether it be in art style or simply game mechanics. I prefer for someone to create a new world for me to experience. Occasionally there are exceptions to this rule, but they are few and far between. I shall cover them in a later section. For now I will focus on what typically draws me right into a game.

First and foremost I want to start having fun as soon as possible. I can't tell you the number of games that have been ruined for me by god awful tutorial that never seem to end. I don't want to have my hand held through the entire first level. Let me jump in the deep-end and figure out what is what. Nintendo by and large delivers this with their first party titles. I can think of very very few that don't let me get to the good part with a great deal of speed. This instantly puts the game up a notch on my entertainment meter. Sometimes I have an hour to play, and really hate to waste it because the game designers decided I was so stupid I needed to be spoon fed the games controls lest I make the terrible mistake of figuring it too quickly.

The second thing I really look for is great and addictive gameplay. This might sound slightly backwards, but it works in my head. The game might suck, but at least I can get to the best part of it sucking before I spend too long with it. Better to spend 20 minutes hating a game than an hour or two going through crap tutorials that ultimately dump you in a game that you will hate for 20 minutes. There is the bother of Nintendo not really being willing to throw you in the deep-end though, which is mildly annoying. Still they usually give you enough of the game to play with before dropping a handful of extra toys on you that you can play with while disregarding any instructions.

Next we have up my love of different art styles. Nintendo has shown a lack of interest in going the realistic route for graphics. I LOVE this. I though Twilight Princess was a huge step back from Wind Waker. Shiney sparklies are nice and all, but if I wanted something that looked just like a tree then I would go outside and look at a damned tree. I don't want my heroes moving around in all sorts of pseudo-realistic ways. I don't particularly care to hear their voices either quite honestly. The closer a game gets to real life, the more I am ready to just ignore it for the majority of games.

Multiplayer is also key. Online multiplayer seems to be getting more and more pervasive on every other system. The Wii has unintentionally fought this off with its terrible online set-up. For this I am grateful. I do not want online co-op. If I wanted to experience playing the game against someone else over the internet I would tape record myself screaming various racial slurs and play it back while playing against a low level CPU. This might not be your typical experience for everyone, but it is mine. Local multiplayer I love though. Have some friends over, order some take out, and maybe get drunk if you feel up for it. All the while knowing you can change games at will (since you only need one copy), have access to any possible system, and can just piss off and do something completely different together as well.

The last, but not least of the ways to really suck me in is to give it a weird spin. I am a sucker for a title with a quircky little twist. Kirby game where you draw rainbows? SOLD. Mario platformer where Peach is the hero and uses her PMS powers to kill bad guys (seriously could this game be more sexist) AND has a goomba eatting umbrella? Day one purchase. I love novel experiences. They might not be the best ever, but they don't have to be really now do they? Not really that likely to ever have a sequel, and it adds a ton to your geek cred to own it. The Wii due to combination of control scheme, and low cost of development gets a ton of these.

Combine the above together and it ends with me almost always prefering a Nintendo console as a primary console. Its not that I don't have faith in the first party titles of other systems, or that I dislike third party games overly but more than Nintendo is a deal breaker developer for me. If I had to choose one developer to get the game from it would be them (despite my blinding love for Treasure they just can't put out enough games) so all other consoles must be a secondary consideration. At least until the other two decide to appeal to the market occupied by me.

@Gnizmo,I don't know how to say this.THERE'S ONLY 1 PHRASE IN YOUR ENTIRE POST THAT I DISAGREE WTIH!That's ' and maybe get drunk if you feel up for it'.Also,I've never played online so even though I prefer local multiplayer to playing with starngers online,I can't tell how much fun that would be.But seriously,as much as I hate the fact that many cool HD-multiplatform games are either not on the wii or the wii has a badly watered down version, there's no way I'd ever pick a HD console over a wii.For every single reason u stated.Of course,as a gamer I still love HD games.

basically the bottom line is that the Wii has the best games. What more is there to say?

^^ Please keep it civil. It's been that way since the earlier argument ceased, and out of respect for Khuutra, let's keep it that way, even if you don't agree with his feelings of what's on topic or not.

I said I was done in here but quickly realized how childish that was.

OT: I can give a better description of why the PlayStation 3 has the games for me this gen. First off, something about them is so personal, similar to previous PlayStations. The games are mostly story based, and that's why I have a higher liking and respect for that particular library.

i dont have respect for khuutra.. i have respect for you because you make sense and have logic, but i dont have respect for khuutra because he is on a power trip just because i am posting in a thread he created.

anyways, i guess ill see you later cgi quality.

What story-based games are you referring to? Are there specific qualities they have which you find lacking in the story-based games you've tried on the 360 and/or Wii? How much experience do you have for the other two? (it's okay if it is not a lot)

Based on my experiences this gen, the PS3's story-based games, such as: Heavenly Sword, Uncharted 1 & 2, MGS4, inFAMOUS and others have really been at the top of my charts, though Nintendo and Microsoft DO have games in their libraries that are well written and intriguing: Metroid Prime 3, Mass Effect etc... Just based on my experience this gen, the PS# seems to have more of those kinds of games and that's why I tend to favor it's library.

I apologize, I wasn't clear.

Could you explain what it was about those stories that you found more engaging? Like, what makes the Uncharted series appeal to you so strongly?
