Forums - General - To all you parents out there:

im sure almost all of the drunk drivers who've killed or injured someone with their car would have claimed they were perfectly capable of driving.

and no i wouldnt say your parents are being reasonable. they are being far to nice to you.

look, I feel for you, I think the law is crappy, but it is the law, and after you broke it, you broke another law. Just wait it out a month, and appreciate what your parents are doing for you. Driving without a license is a serious offense, and doing it twice, could lead to some pretty hefty consequences. You parents are saving you from yourself.

That is what I think it is boiling down to.

The thing is that they don't really do anything to you for driving without a license. I can only speak for what happens in California, but all they really do is charge you up the ass for it.

In that sense, I think the parents should let him drive if he is willing to risk having those charges. Part of becoming an adult is making big decisions like that for yourself, and it seems like the parents are holding him back from doing this.

Yeah, I don't 'hate' my parents for doing this, I just disagree with their reasoning. Hell, they've done a lot for me and forgiven me a lot, but I don't think it's necessary for them to punish me for something that *technically* doesn't even affect them. Yes they don't HAVE to drive me around, they'd just rather do it then let me drive, which actually makes it more difficult for all parties involved. And for the record, I don't drink and drive anymore, so I guess the law had its intended effect.

All I wanted to know was how other parents would've treated the situation if it was their kid.

I would agree with you on this point, but you also have to remember, the parents have to pick up the pieces, they are driving him everywhere, and charging him a mere pittance for rent. What I would do if I was his parent is give him a choice. He could either continue to live under my roof and live by my rules. OR he can do what he wants, in which case, I would kick him out, and promise him that I would not be there to bail him out or drive him to work if he got caught again.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

My answer is your 20. They have no obligation to take care of you, and they have no authority to remove your keys from you.

So you have a simple choice. Take your keys and take care of yourself, or live off the kindness of others, and deal with there rules.

Oh, and the drunk driving thing. I think driving drunk is stupid, but I think what's drunk, and what the law says is drunk are not remotely the same thing.

Were those deaths caused specifically because they were drunk? Do you think that it is possible that those deaths could have occured because of some other underlying factor?

I wouldn't go as far to say only stupid people drink and drive. That is a pretty ignorant statement if you ask me.

I'm sorry, what the f*ck are smoking and can I have some?

How is it ignorant? The figure was for deaths caused by drink driving, y'know driving whilst drunk. Have you ever tried driving drunk? It's a good way to kill yourself because you have severely reduced reaction times and less control over your actions.

I'm so glad that none of my friends drive drunk, unfortunately the reason is because we lost three friends in a drink driving incident (Driver driving on the wrong side of the road at 80Mph) that made us realise just how fatal drink driving can be.

Uhh.. So let me get this straight.

Driver was driving on wrong side of road at 80mph

Driver was drunk

Conclusion: Driving drunk makes you drive on wrong side of road at 80 mph.

Do you think it's possible that this person was just a fucking retard who shouldn't be trusted to drive in the first place?

*Claps hands*

Well done, that's exactly what I'm saying. The driver was drunk and he drove the wrong side of the road full blast because his drunken state made him think it was a good idea. Like you think a lot of stupid ideas are good when you are drunk.

Have you ever been drunk before?

Hello I'm Highwaystar101, have we met before? I make drunk threads at a rate of like one per month and I'm a member of CAMRA. I go to clubs, pubs and Beer festivals. So yeah, I get drunk.

I understand this. I am asking though because if you have ever been drunk, you would know that being drunk doesn't instantly make you go out and do this insane shit he is describing. In my drunkest state, I have never ever thought stabbing somebody, jumping off of a building, driving down the wrong side of the road at 80mph etc. was a good idea. And neither has anybody I have ever known.

Maybe not to you or me, we could be nice drunks, I know I am, everyone is my best friend when I'm drunk.

But how many fights have you seen outside nightclubs over a spilt drink or fights outside a bar because some guy was looking at another guys girlfriend? I know I've seen dozens. Drink (particularly Stella Artois) makes some people act more irrational than they would do normally.

Oh my God I can't believe what I'm hearing lol. You honestly think certain "types" of alcohol cause differences in behavior? Come on man, alcohol is alcohol, regardless of what additives are included. This one bitch I know thinks vodka makes her a lot more mean, whiskey makes her laugh, and rum makes her sleepy. she is STUPID.

Here you go check this link http://www.alcoholalert.com/drunk-driving-statistics.html

currently 37% of all driving fatalities are caused directly from drink driving. from 1982 to 2003 that figure went from 60% to 40%, which hopefully shows that drivers are becoming more responsible for their actions.

I believe being drunk increases the risk of being in an accident, but I am just concerned that people use it as a scapegoat, and make statements like 'everyone who drives drunk is an idiot.' I think there are circumstances where people who drive over the limit are not a danger, and should be let go.

People do not use it as a scapegoat. Do you know how much drink driving reduces your action times alone despite it being such a small amount? It is from 1 to 5 seconds depending on how much you have drank. That's enough to cause a fatal accident. Alcohol impairs you ability to drive, fact. Just like it impares your ability to do anything. Everyone who drives drunk and thinks it is a good idea is an idiot in my view, it's a stupid thing to do and it's a good way to end up dead.

Why do you think the government are so keen to stop drink driving? I know in the UK the government and NHS are constantly running adverts against drink driving, drug driving and driving whilst on the phone, because those situations kill people.

In the USA in 1999 drivers caused 7% of road accidents, BUT caused 38% of the fatalities. What does that does that tell you about driving drunk? It's often not a case of just bumping somebodies car bumper like many crashes where the drivers were sober. It is often the case that driving drunk causes irrational behaviour and impaired ability to drive, which, as a vast amount of evidence shows, is a lethal concoction.
