Forums - Sales - Fun Fact: Game sales Wii vs. PS3

nuninhuh said:

reading the topic i was thinking Faxanadu was somehow praising the wii (the opposite is more frequent)... i was worried. With the last post it all came clear...

I am not praising any console in this thread. I am stating facts.

Looking at my last post, I am convinced there is a causality between % of games offered for a console and % of marketshare.

Prove me wrong.

But what is that saying against the Wii? I dont get it.

Actually Kill, I totally take it back. Here comes my analysis sponsored by Killy:

Percentage of total games in game database per console:
Wii - 44.1%
X360 - 31.1%
PS3 - 24.7%

Percentage of overall console sales:
Wii - 48.4%
X360 - 29.1%
PS3 - 22.5%

Q.E.D.

This proves causality.

Actually, this percentage is very close to the actual HW market share, wich would also explain wii sw success. There's also the fact that Wii sw is very concentrated in the the top 20 games, totalling almost 53% of all wii sw(acording to VGchartz), so the hundreds of games actually doesn't count that much as the top sellers as  Wii sports, Mario galaxy and others.

And look at PSP vs DS:

Market share 32% vs 68%

Game share 30% vs 70%

Still not convinced?

According to vgchartz, the Wii has over 600 games that already sold copies to consumers, whereas the PS3 has less than 400 (about 360).

To me, this explains Wii dominance.

Does it count if 99% of the Wii library is shovelware shit? The reason for Wii dominance is that everyone was amazed by the motion (gimicky) controlls at first (me included). Later most people realize, that the game offering and value / cost just ins't worth it. Unless they have no other console to play with, they usualy move on.

It doesn't explain why the Wii keeps dominating hardware and software sales after years...

Well actually it does. The exact reason why Wii keep to dominate hardware and software sales is that they've expanded the consumer group by adding a non-gamer folk. And those people did not buy Wii to play great and quality games, but fell for the gimmicky controller and something which could be called "Apple" effect. Why did someone's grandma get a Wii? Well it certainly wasn't for games in the most common sense, she won't be playing quality Wii titles such as SMG, Zelda or Metroid, but instead she'll use Wii Fit.

And that's a fact, of this whole console generation Wii has the largest userbase share of nongamers / first-time console owners. If you take a look at the sales of casual shovelware crap and "hardcore" games, the shovelware rock it. One might even suspect, that PS3 has more "gamers" than Wii, since I can't really picture true gamers buying Wii Fit (and we are talking 22.3 milions here)... wanna lose fat? Get to the gym you chubby bastards!

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Hmm I guess I am not a true gamer because I bought wii fit (I should trade in Demon Souls and not buy Uncharted 2 now, neither should I pick up New Super Mario Bros Wii) also insulting others for being overweight? Just out curiousity how old are you?

You are telling me I am not a true gamer but rather a chubby bastard?

You are so cool man. With you 12.5 years of age, you already know how the world turns.
