HL2 + episode 1 and episode 2 are best single player experiences you can get in an FPS. So much variety, and freedom to tackle enemies as you wish... None of the COD BS of "pick up rocket launcher to stop the tank!!!" over and over...what if I don't want to get rocket launcher?

Anywho, HL2 and Halo 1 to me are 2 FPS games that will never be topped as far as single player campaign is concerned. The genre is too saturated now for anything to stand out as those 2 games did...

How dare you say Halo in the same breath as Half Life 2.  Halo was repetitive and boring compared to HL2.

While I respect your opinion...but Halo 1 when it came out in 2001 was anything but boring.

The game introduced so many new things like open/non corridor battles, regen shields,  vehicle combat, coop... that it even to this day feels very fresh and playable. Not many games from that time feel right when played today...try playing Unreal or Soldier of Fortune.

Yes it had some pacing issues in the middle but combined with the fact it had amazing AI, very smooth gunplay and you could have coop with a buddy any time...I believe Halo 1 should be considered the best FPS single player campaign until HL2 came out.

I think Half:Life (the original) is better.

While Halo was fun, repetitive gameplay and some uninspired level design let it down in my opinion.

this is my favourite game of all time, I'm really glad your enjoying it, its the most immersive game in history.

This game was the best. I also remember getting stuck at some parts for at least 10 minutes because I couldn't figure out what to do to get to the next section lol =/

I'm not a fan of the vehicles AT ALL in Halo, due to the awful control scheme.

My biggest proble with Halo, however, is the repetitiveness.  About 1/2 to 2/3 through the game, I almost put it down, it was so unbearable.  Clear a room full of enemies, travel across a bridge... clear an IDENTICAL room, travel across an IDENTICAL bridge, clear an IDENTICAL room, travel an IDENTICAL bridge... and so and and so forth.

It honestly felt like they had a decent 2-3 hour game and used copy/paste to expand it up to full length.  I don't see how so many people can give this a pass.

That's a fair complaint, to be fair, though, Halo was clearly rushed to meet the Xbox launch, as I always felt the basic story, concept, etc. was really good, but hindered by the use of repeat and rinse rooms in-between the more polished battles and set pieces.  The funniest thing I always though was the fact the interior rooms repeated so much they added arrows on the floor to make sure you didn't get mixed up which way you were going.

I thought the vehicles handled okay, though.

I think comparing the metacritic scores for Halo on Xbox vs Halo on PC makes it clear it was how well Halo played as a console FPS vs as an FPS that got the praise, once it hit PC it's score dropped a fair bit, and the repetitive levels, etc. were criticised far more heaviliy.

I do think though Halo did add some nice elements to FPS, but apart from its huge following due to the way it took off with Xbox in US (and now 360) I would agree Half Life and Half Life 2 did much more respectively when they launched, particularly Half Life.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Comparing Halo Xbox vs Halo PC is misleading. First of all it came out much later so it lacked the initial freshness and wow factor everyone had already experienced on the Xbox (which most likely affected the scoring) and second of all PC gamers have different tastes and a holier than thou attitude to console games which is reflected on the scoring as well.

I find all fanboys have a holier than thou attitude, whether PC, 360, PS3, etc.

My point is I would argue the PC score is closer to the title as an FPS vs the console score (at launch vs when it actually hit PC).  The game had clear and fairly noticeable  flaws that were ignored by many reviewers as overall the game seemed amazing on Xbox.

I think Halo was a great title at the time, but no game with such poor level design for the interiors, Library, etc. vs the nice exterior levels and set-pieces, that so clearly showed the result of rapid 'padding', should really have scored as high as Halo did on Xbox IMO.

Actually if you read the reviews more carefully you would see that the main complaints are the technical issues:

framerate drops

lack of co-op

not enough improvements to justify 2 years of waiting

Repetitive levels is the only thing that also was a problem on the Xbox. But that didn't matter so much, because co-op easily makes up for those repetitive solo moments.

Framerate drops were not really an issue... the real issue was that you needed a state-of-the-art computer to be able to handle a 2 year old console game (which, incidentally, ran on a console made from mostly off-the-shelf PC components).  With an adequate PC, I can assure you there are no framerate issues.

And there's higher resolution graphics

More precice controls

And online multi-player.

Anyway... Halo's not a BAD game, I just don't think its single-player campaign is anywhere near the same level as Half-Life or Half-Life 2.

No of course there aren't framerate issues anymore, but that was THE big reason why many reviewers rated the game lower than the Xbox version. Bad port (by Gearbox) just like Saints Row 2, Resident Evil 4 and GTA 4.

It has higher resolutions but a 2 years later release.... that doesn't make the game look better by reviewer standards
